Tim had carpel tunnel surgery. Apparently he stopped making payments to his webhost for the website, stopped answering emails, put the company on hiatus and in the process of this never individually contacted customers with outstanding orders informing of them what was going on. He deleted everything from his facebook wall as well. More and more stories popped up on google about not receiving their money or cabs after long periods of time, and a lot of them very recent due to this string of events.
What he did here ^^^ says it all, Everything he said and did means only one thing. That he's dishonest period. IMO if an honest person who's running a business suddenly has personal or family problems, or medical issues that will prevent them from fulfilling their promised orders (especially prepaid or deposits on orders), you don't cancel everything and disappear.
Again IMO if you're an honest businessman, You should in fact be even more open about your issues and let every customer know. Then let them decide if they still want the product and if so to let them know how long of a delay they're looking at. If they can't wait, their monies should be immediately refunded. The same thing with any customer who says no I want my money back. That's what an honest person and business does. My answer in a case like this would be. Yes Mr. Businessman I'm sorry about your problems. BUT those are YOUR problems not mine and I hope you get them solved. BUT for now, I'd kindly like my money back. If you get the issues sorted out please contact me and I MAY decide to re-order.
A quick search shows this about Carpal tunnel surgery.
*If you had open surgery on your dominant hand and you do repeated actions at work, you may be able to go back to work in 6 to 8 weeks. Repeated motions include typing or assembly-line work. If the surgery was on the other hand and you don't do repeated actions at work, you may be able to return to work in 7 to 14 days. Worse case is 12 months*
So yeah, not the worst surgery but not the end of the world either. Plenty of time to let customers know and make arrangements to complete their orders or refund their money.
As far as the comparison to Dr. Bass, this IS EXACTLY the same scenario! Let's not kid ourselves about this. These people, who are what I call *fly by night builders* know there's little to no chance they'll ever have to give any customer their money back. Just read the Dr. Bass thread and see what the people were told by Lawyers and Law Enforcement about getting any recourse. It wasn't pretty.
This is why I'll never buy from a builder who's not a major manufacturer. Regardless of how good their supposed gear is. You may feel different and that's OK.
