EatS1stBassist

I’d like to pay a little tribute to the man if I may.

His screen name here on TB is EatS1stBassist, decoded it means Eddie and the Subtitles 1st Bassist. His real name is Ron Barnhill, and he was the original bassist for, imo, one of the most important Orange County / LA punk bands of the late 70s early 80s, Eddie and the Subtitles. They were in the same crowd and shared the stage with Black Flag, Germs, X, Middle Class. Matter of fact, Eddie and the Subtitles would often headline those shows. They were a big deal in OC punk.

One of the very first basslines I learned as a 12 year old punk was Eddie and the Subtitles “American Society”. Simple, solid, and badass. That bassline was written by Ron before he left the band. I loved that song then, and I still love it today. I was able to tell him that a few years ago here on TB, and he was as humble about it as he always was here. “Hey thanks, glad you like it”. It’s a total punk anthem. A classic. No, THANK YOU, Ron. Rest in peace.

Thanks for sharing that, Matt. It's nice to hear he really was as nice a guy as he seemed. And I always did wonder what that screen name meant. Now we know!
