Full Stack Bassist Group (Scott's Bass Lessons).

Hi,

I'm in Melbourne with less than two hours to sign up. I'm a lifetime SBL member and pay an annual fee to access all the accelerator courses. A few comments above regarding the first module are appreciated. It's difficult with our poor exchange rate in Australia - the full payment is around A$750. Still on the fence as I haven't got through all the accelerators yet - let alone the normal SBL content. Thoughts anyone? (also I'm between jobs so that provides a reality check).

As an aside the accelerators are great. I went through the technique accelerator during covid and it improved my playing much more than I thought it would. There is no hype in the courses. Just down to business - unlike the SBL youtube offerings.

Module 2 is available in 27 days. I'm thinking I'm going to pace myself at a few days per lecture (4-5 for M1). Let it really sink in. The perfectionist in me wants to tackle everything all at once. I'm glad the future modules are locked for that reason. I could see myself obsessing over hours of content and not absorbing much.
I've gone back to Lecture 1 this evening and just having fun with that chord sequence. Again, throwing in way too many notes, walking lines, and turning into jazz. I can't get jazz out of my head! I need to learn to funk and groove again lol.
I'm going to do the opposite. I'm going to get thru the lessons as quickly as possible (not rushing, and definitely taking time to do the exercises properly), and then I'll use the extra time I hope to have at the end of the module to repeat the end of lesson exercises as needed. I'd rather have the extra time to focus on mastering the final module 1 exercise as I assume it will incorporate everything we have learned so far , instead of spending additional time on each lesson.

That is my plan anyway. We'll see how it goes.

This is great group! I like reading your thoughts and plans here, as it helps me want to stay in the course. The Guided Practice time issue had me bummed last night and I wrote the email to SBL support. Anyway, despite that, I'm going to practice M1L2 now for my alotted 20-25 min.

M1L2 is gonna take me a few days. Maybe a week. Maybe more. I want to be able to read and feel all the rhythmic variations, including those 16th notes, with complete confidence.

Conceptually it’s all rather simple but can I sound as good as Scott when I play it?

Well that’s the challenge, innit?

Hold on, the live practice sessions aren’t recorded and made available later?

I just checked the 8am GMT page and there’s no mention of a recording.

Ah, the beauty of books, manuscripts and hand-written notes - they are yours forever, they don't expire and the hardware doesn't become obsolete!!

But to the point, with streamed lectures being such a (seemingly) key element there really should be recordings that you can go back to time and again. It's not like Scott doesn't have the kit to make videos :)

Yeah those 1/16 notes are a bit tricky. I too am going to need some time to be able to flow between them, one to another in the same groove.

To really feel them I play them super slow, count them, and swing them really hard to begin feeling the loping rhythm. Then I try to straighten them out and work up speed and smoothness. Then it all falls apart and I do it again.

They said they would be recorded. I’m sure they’ll add a link after the fact.

I really enjoyed lectures 1 and 2.

I plan to spend "as long as it takes" on the lecture 2 exercises. I've eschewed my "that's about good enough" attitude because, well if it was good enough then i wouldn't need this course!

I'm running SBL's Technique accelerator course alongside this program, on lesson 5 and it's made a massive difference so far.

great to have this group to bounce off of, see you on the call shortly for those attending.

I did it in the end, and split the payments even though you pay a bit more. Seemed like an opportunity that shouldn't be missed even with all the other considerations....
I think you made a good decision. I feel like I'm already getting my money's worth with the first two lessons. The bonus course material has been valuable as well especially the groove play along. I've done a bunch of other online courses and the production of SBL's lessons can't be beat.

The teacher last night (depending on your time zone) did confirm that the videos are recorded. The most valuable part for me was at the end of the lesson where he talked about rhythm and subdivision. He used a metronome to help with the 16th note subdivisions. Really useful stuff. I would check it out when it gets uploaded. He even stayed past the hour to talk about it.

Quick report on the practice session. I think the max online was 162ish people.

Some minor technical issues to start but once it got started it was helpful. It is basically a run thru of the exercises from M1L2.

A few people felt the need to break in and make comments or ask questions, which isn't always helpful in a setting with that many people.

If you can't make the live session, I don't think you are really missing anything. Watch the replay and do the play along exercises. In some ways not doing it live will be helpful because you can pause/backup if you are having any issues with the material.

As we get deeper into it I'll be curious to see how these sessions go, as not everyone will have progressed thru the modules/lesson at the same pace. So I'm not sure how they will handle people being at different points in the program.
