Genzler Amplification Club

My rig for a smooth jazz gig tonight.

Steve, I'm so envious. I've wanted to play smooth jazz for years but no one in my area plays it. Who are some of the artists your group will be covering tonight?

The Genz combo will serve you well! Have a great time tonight, post some photos or vids.

I have a terrible memory.

Some smooth, some not so smooth I guess. It was fun. Haven’t played that stuff for a long time. Fun to use an amp again as well.

Re the Mag350, I think you can get the bracket that holds the head on to that cabinet? The cab might be predrilled for it?
Yeah, the Mag350 I bought came with the bracket, so I guess it must have originally been part of a combo. I haven’t attached it yet but I can see from the holes on the cab that it’ll work. Taking it out as a combo for its first gig tomorrow!

Wasn't sure where to put this post; there's another thread re/ good small combos for upright, but figured here'd be good, and it can always be linked.

My father, a long-time professional trombonist with the name big bands in the late 50s/early 60s, Broadway pit musician through the 70s, long time published arranger, and still going strong at 89, leads a rehearsal band in Westchester County, NY. Calling it a "rehearsal band" is kind of like calling Miles "some trumpet guy;" it's made up of some of the finest players in the NYC area. Dad occasionally gets hung up for a player or two, and I sub the piano chair, and once in a great while the fourth trumpet chair. On Tuesday night this week, I got kind of a panicked call from Dad saying his bass player couldn't make Thursday's rehearsal due to injury, and Dad asked me if I could play. Me subbing for this guy is kind of like sending in a 7th grade saxophonist to sub for Coltrane, but we both figured I'd be better than nothing. I threw my Acoustic Array Pro (regular model, not the Bass Array version) and Azola BugBass II in the car and headed downstate.

The rehearsal went well; I played better than I thought I could, and the guys in the band, as usual, were all wonderful people as well as wonderful players.

Why am I telling this story? After rehearsal, the baritone sax player, who sits furthest away from the bass in the setup, mentioned to me how good the bass sounded and that, while it didn't seem any louder than usual, he could always hear it and it was easy to lock into. Despite the regular bass player playing a real upright through an amp, and being a much, MUCH, MMMUUUUCCCCHHHHH better player than I am, the bari player (a SERIOUS player.... a fixture in the NYC pit scene and great jazz player too) said that sometimes the sound gets lost and he has a hard time locking in from across the room. He said he didn't have any trouble at all hearing the definition of the bass throughout the entire rehearsal. When I've played piano in other rehearsals with the regular bassist, I can unequivocally state that the bassist's sound is beautiful and that he's a GREAT player... it ain't on him.

Soooo.... the difference? GENZLER. Certainly wasn't me.

This may not help since I have not tried Kinetix, but the Streamliner has been my all time fav amp for a while. I also use Magellan heads and I usually put a sushi box More and space heater in front of them. It gets very close to the streamliner. I imagine it would be a similar story for Kinetix. Genzler continually evolves though and I’m certain Kinetix is a slightly different animal than the streamliner. Therefore, it’s just a matter of time before I bite the bullet.
Hahah wow we are on the same thing man i just made a post what would pair well stacking with the UA! lol the susi has been really good for my tone. But with my onboard pre “dark glass tone cap” im not a fan i wish I did more homework on stock pre before I got it. But the Magellan is so great with eqn and along with the UA it’s Been solid.

I love the Magellan i bet kinetic is one stop shop. But wondering if for now if maybe adding another UA or something. I would love thay kinetic if I could have them both I would haha. But I imagine if I ever were to have it I wouldn’t have the Magellan pre. Another thing i love though is the Di of the Magellan. The flat eq signal to the FOH sounds great.

I can only tell you my experience, and I now own both the Mag 800 (early adopter) and Kinetix 800 (also early adopter).
Since I added the Kinetix, I don't feel anything is missing from my arsenal.
I use the Kinetix for my Zeppelin stuff, and the Magellan for near everything else, including the rare occasion I double on DB.
The warmth of the Mag has been "it" for me for many years.
the extra kick from the Kinetix as a rock head, well that's now "it" for me and my needs when I really want to rock and still sound incredibly articulate (so much that it makes me be a better player). That's my experience.

I've tried many other heads. Including some very good ones from Berg and Boogie. This is all I need....well, and this lamp.
Man I think you get it for the tones. I feel I would run both maybe tbh if I ever got to playing bigger places cause channel one of the Magellan is so clean and pristine for some diff tones and as you put if I switched over the Kin as my “channel” two ive have all thr bass tones covered. Maybe it’s thr nerd tone stuff in us but with audio quality improving overs bassist I think have more Options on thr tones. I think Bergs sn Genzler reminds me of eachother each their own. But more about how do I say super not clean a flat Eqn sound where it’s not color just pure nice quality sound an we shape it but they also can sound good just plug a go

Ive not gotten to play band levels but Ive played the rigs in shops and I think the 2 genzler heads. A maybe mix of genzler sn Berg cabs would be my dream rig.

Out at one of our monthly stops last night. I decided to give the low end on the bass a significant bump on quite a few songs and of course the MG and BA410 didn’t break a sweat. I have installed a tone monster preamp in my TL-5 and that thing is hot and has some heft to it in the low end. Always impressed with what this rig can do….

I’ve been really thinking about and am very intrigued by Genzler Amps and cabinets for past year and just wanted to know if there’s any dealer or shop that carries Genzler products in the North Carolina region. Currently have the Genzler Magellan Pre/DI and love it. Also currently use Aguilar TH500 w/ SL410 cab and think it’s great but Genzler has my attention and I’d love to try some amps/cabs soon. If anyone knows where I could do this let me know?! Thanks and cheers!

A quick scan of the Genzer site shows dealers in NC - SC - TN - VA & KY. Road trip anyone? :)
