Did you miss the "and passing someone" bit? That would make it such that I'm at least keeping pace with traffic, if not exceeding it. :)

Just because someone is doing less than the posted MPH in the slow lane does not mean you are keeping pace with traffic by doing the speed limit.

I'm trying to tell you something, and you're just not having it. You cause accidents. Period. Done.

mmmm no? If I'm passing people, I am allowed in the passing lane. If I'm not passing, I'm not in the fast lane. People breaking laws cause accidents - speeding being one of the biggest, and one of the biggest killers in traffic accidents, too. Period. Done.

If you are going slower than the flow of traffic, here is what is happening:

Drivers are going around you in other lanes, and weaving in and out and YOU ARE CAUSING IT. As I said, all 50 states have laws about it. If I am driving with the flow of traffic, going 65 in a 55 mph zone, and you are passing someone at 55 mph, I am not breaking any laws, and you are.

Learn something new, please.

You have gotten people killed, and you have been self-righteous while doing it.

Learn something about driving today.

Thank you.

That's not how it works, though. If I come up on someone going 50 in a 55 zone, I can pass. There's no law against that. Once I'm done passing, I return to the slow lane. That sequence, regardless of what you sspeeders are doing, is not at all illegal - I would not get a ticket for that in any circumstances (perhaps the person doing 50 would - not my business).
You're trying to justify grossly breaking the law, and it isn't flying.

That is NOT correct. Look it up. If you are in the passing lane going slower than the flow of traffic, you are breaking the law. This is no longer for your benefit. I don't care what you post. This is for people READING the thread.

It is not MY OPINION that I am right about this. It is ON THE BOOKS.

Slower Traffic Keep Right: 50-State Summary of Keep Right Traffic Laws

There are two types of drivers: (1) those who get upset when somebody is illegally hanging out in the left passing lane, and (2) those who are blissfully ignorant that hanging out in the passing lane is both illegal and dangerous.

You keep going back to "hanging out in the left lane". I keep saying that's exactly what I'm not doing. I'm done with ya, you're not debating in good faith. Back on ignore you go.

I have never needed to put anyone on ignore, but go right ahead. You are defending a position, that is driving less than the speed of the flow of traffic in the passing lane, and then saying you're not doing that, and now saying I am not "debating in good faith." Now it is a silly argument, so we are both wise to be done with it. I'm sorry I've offended you to the point where you need to put me on ignore.

To everyone else reading this; if you are going slower than the flow of traffic, and people are honking at you, and flipping you off, you are a menace on the roadway, and you are breaking the law in every single state.

That is my point, not some attack on Selta, who I was never aware of before this conversation, and whom I have nothing personal against.

Re: passing

In the NYSDMV Driver's Handbook as well as several car and motorcycle owner's manuals (I'm a nerd), it is recommended to speed up 5-20mph from your "driving speed" (aka "cruising speed") to accomplish a pass- dependent on the local laws, of course. This is known as "passing speed". Check with your local authorities on what is recommended at any given Posted Speed Limit. The Commonwealth of Virginia is known to be particularly strict and many areas of it may not even recognize Passing Speed as a thing, though most locales in most other states do.

@Selta, it is placing unnecessary strain on the social fabric to perform the discourtesy of passing at driving-speed in most areas. Totally unnecessary. You probably don't even have a clutch pedal? You can just apply less than .01% of your available leg strength upon the throttle pedal to zoot up 20mph, then release the pedal entirely for a moment to return to driving speed. Driving courteously is a super easy thing to do with cars made after 1990.

I just voted. S l o w.

Doing 16 in a School Zone 20, There are kids around and the need to stop fast at the least distance is important to that kid that just went in front of you. You are not saving 40 seconds if you make impact with someone.

Also do 43 in a 45, and such. Whatever the post I am at or two less.

My record- not one ticket or accident, not even one pull over warning.

People pissed= probably a lot but I do not pay their insurance so...

I am right there with you on the school zone bit. Ours are 20 mph around here as well (most are photo enforced too), and I'm generally closer to 15 than 20. I actually saw a kid get hit once - IMO totally the kid's fault, but, having just that little bit more reaction time + reduced stopping distance likely would've changed the outcome.

I don't think anyone is begrudging a tiny bit of extra caution in a school zone.

But, if you are doung two under in the PASSING lane on a FREEWAY, it is YOU causing danger.

I'm generally not in a rush, so I don't need to "grab another gear". If my pace bothers you, that is your own problem, deal with it.
this is an antisocial mentality.

You sure do make a lot of assumptions about how I perform my passing (and what vehicle I drive, too -- you're wrong, by the way, in both assumptions) :D. But, that's your prerogative I guess :)
there were no assumptions, one plain observation, and one guess based on car sales in the US. Most registered civilian vehicles are automatics with cruise control. The probability that any given stranger drives a highway-capable golf cart is over 70%. High-five, fellow stick-driver! :)

But if I'm doing 45 in a 45 and passing someone, well, you'll just have to calm yourself down and wait til I'm done passing.
this is where you announce on the www that you intentionally pass at driving speed without regard for other people.

I'd like to know how often these Impeding the flow of traffic law (or whatever it's called) is actually enforced. There are a bunch of 'keep right except to pass' signs around on both federal highways and multi lane state roads, but folks are too busy looking at their phones to notice, I guess :meh:

I'd be comfortable betting that "nearly never" would be the response from any highway patrol officer. Stoners, elderly, people who accidentally mis-dose themselves with their prescriptions are probably the only ones to get just that one ticket. It'd more likely be one more ticket in along with a few others if it leads to a collision or an observed road rage incident that gets out of hand.
