Hard cases now non essential?

I prefer traditional hard cases but I wish they came with more straps, handles, and external pockets, sort of a hybrid.

See there. There's a need for betterment. These "plastic" ones by Pelican, SKB, Gator and the like are sort of a hybrid. But still, I wonder how much protection they make. You could attach more handling to them, a choice of how it will be carried. Of course, it's very little reason to have any case go beyond the expense of the instrument, but as in Flight cases you can use one for many instruments. You don't have to buy one for each instrument. Provided they're all solid bodies. Same with gig bags. They can be used for a larger variety of sizes and shapes. The regular hard shell case that comes with the instrument very often doesn't fit anything else than just that instrument.

The plastic/hybrid case for my Music Man bass, that came with it, was great, but it resides in the basement. I use gig bags for it, even when traveling. The thing is when stacking up a van, is that if you have a flight case, or hard case you tend to place it so you can stack other things on top...when using gig bag, you know that that one is the last one you put on top of all other things...before you close the back doors...;) It is much easier too, if space should be very very tight, to sit at the front seat, with a gig bag in between your legs for shorter runs. A hard shell case is a nuisance, and a flight case totally out of discussion. Well, if you crash, and the airbag opens, well then, if the bass hasn't survived or not, isn't your biggest problem.

I don't know but the weight of flight cases, doesn't it defeats the purpose? Makes airport luggage personell grump and just wants to throw them around. They're heavy for sure, but it should have been quite some damage and serious drop or hits before something has happened to the instrument. Mind you, if a flight case "breaks" or cracks in any way, chances are that the bass (or instrument) in it, will take a serious hit too. I mean if something breaks a flight case...it's beyond anything else too.

..........oh how I wish I had a clunker bass for a demo!!!

Maybe it was a bass like these...foldable...

You don't need any case for these, it's already broken...

It seems that SKB has some kind of molded hybrid in their iSeries. I like them better though, but at almost 250 USD ... well... keeps water out and they have the nerve to call it flight case. But it's something like these that makes the old tolex vintage cases some kind of ... mothballing. But plastic molded locks... I dunno...

It has wheels even!

I prefer the regular hard case. Thinner and looks nicer than a flight case. Ever bump into a wall with a flight case? Bye bye wall.

I think the hard case is more convenient to access than the soft case. Just flip latches, rather than do the zipper and hope you don't knock the tuners out of tune.

I ruined a mint Jazz bass that was in its soft case by accidentally tossing another bass on top of it.

Playing local shows I use the hard case that came with my main bass. They usually get stacked up against the wall and I wouldn't trust a gig bag for that. And we just pile all the equipment into two SUV's, I can stash my hardcase on the side rather than it being stacked. For touring, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned these types of tour cases. They're cheaper than two flight cases.

I use the factory hard cases because they're durable enough, portable enough, and I already have them since they came with the basses. Anyway, the SKB molded plastic "thermometer" style cases Fenders came with from the 90s are pretty light. If I was in a major touring band with roadies I'd have all anvil style cases for sure.

When I played gigs far out of town I ALWAYS packed my basses in hard cases - they travelled with all the gear, amps etc. so gig bags were out of the question.

I have a single hiscox case (shaped like a bass) and another one on the way with my new bass - but I almost exclusively use gig bags that I can carry comfortably.

The Hiscox is an EXCELLENT case and offers a lot of protection and keeps temperatures at bay really well. I just don`t need it for everyday use.

I use mi gig bag to move my bass from the stand in my studio>back seat of my car > stand on stage. I gig bag do the job.

What are you needs? Flying often, bass on uhaul truck, bass go with you to college>starbucks>friend house, etc.

All depends on actual needs, some people need a gig bag, other people need a bullet proof case.
