As if they'd have me, Ringo and Charlie Watts. I'd have been in over my head instantly, but the late Jeff Porcaro just stands out in my mind: Whenever the word 'drummer' flashes across the grey matter, he's always the first I think of. Then Kenny Aronoff.

And I've always been a Kenny Jones fan: He got the short end of the stick getting drafted to replace the late Keith Moon. They wanted him as he wasn't like Keith, then canned him as he wasn't like Keith. Go figure.

I saw Bill Bruford live once with his jazz quartet. It was the most stunning display of complete and total limb independence I've ever seen. He had a mirror image set; the same drums and cymbals stretching out to both sides with a snare and cable driven high-hat in the middle. He would change sticks, hands, feet, whatever and whenever he felt like it and made it look effortless. I even got him to sign my Fragile CD cover after the show. My favorite "current" drummer would have to be Gavin Harrison. If you don't know the name, look him up. IMHO he's the best. Honorable mention to my son who can even cop some of those Gavin Harrison parts and cut his teeth on The Beatles. (He's also an awesome keyboardist...dad likes to brag on him :D:thumbsup::cool:)

In no particular order:

Neil Peart: Rush - supernatural drummer
Matt Abts: Gov’t Mule - incredible drummer with a great feel
Frank Beard: ZZ Top - great feel and creates a solid foundation for their music.
Vinnie Appice: various band. - much to this guy and quite versatile
Gil Moore: Triumph - aside from fantastic playing and great feel the man is an amazing vocalist.

There are more but those are the ones that caught my imagination. I played drums before I switched to bass at 15 and these were some of my drum heroes.

I forgot about Gil Moore. His drumming in Lay It On The Line was one of my favorites back then...

Playing with someone like this, who plays the song, with confidence, patience, finesse, power and isn't trying to stuff the prverbial ten pounds into a five pound bag is what's it's all about for me.
