I play with a couple other bands, but this is my main songwriting project. Sometimes I have collaborators, but I did this latest one solo at home over the past spring. Trying desperately to get something positive out of lockdown, I guess. I programmed the drums in Fruity Loops using my own samples, and played everything else.

Oh sure, that's what keeping me sane these days. I've found that writing and producing is incredibly helpful for my playing, it helps you take off your "bass player hat" and listen for what the song actually needs.

Here's a Gram Parsons-ish tune I helped a friend with over the summer (I produced, arranged, played bass, and sang the 3rd vocal)

This is a solo track I did at the beginning of quarantine:

And here's a record I did in GarageBand 1.1 a few years ago:

About a year ago, I was pretty burned out from trying to put & keep a cover band together. As a diversion, I decided to start recording ideas as they came to me. At this point, I have bits and pieces of 10-12 songs. It's all me on bass, MT Power Drum Kit2 to create & edit MIDI drum tracks, and me on scratch vocals. With enough takes, I can cobble together a passable vocal, but I am certainly not a singer/performer. Early on, I used a Native Instruments plugin for guitar, but since May I have been taking guitar lessons – enough to belt out some power chords and arpeggios. I'm capable of writing lyrics, but I'm not very disciplined. Eventually, I'd like to find somebody to collaborate with on guitar, lyrics and vocals – with the goal of performing the songs live someday.

My home "studio" consists of this because I'm totally intimidated by all the computer software.

From this little $99 (refurbished) 8-track, I upload a SoundCloud account. By the Mighty Hammer of Thor

Two of the "hits"

And a couple of the latest

Respect for using the handheld recorder. I use the boss BR 600 because I can't leave a computer anywhere permanently. It's a lot easier to lay down tracks, but a lot harder do anything else.
