To celebrate the release of “Skyfall” (
scheduled for April 2), the new single from the Hamburg pumpkins that marks the official return of the legendary Kiske and Hansen in the band, I decided to make the bass cover of the “I Want Out: one of the most important and iconic song of the power metal played with my Tribe SF4 Custom. Long live Pumpkins!

Here is a piece I wanted to do for a long time, 4'33" was composed by John Cage in 1952, it is for any instrument or ensemble.
If you don't know or don't understand I suggest that you read about it.

Is this serious? Very!
Does that mean you can't enjoy it if you don't think it is serious? No. As long as you enjoy it.

Here's a playthrough of a song from our latest album (released about a month ago through Apollon Records).

Nothing fancy or difficult, just a mellow track with a semi-melodic bass line.

This song commemorates a few firsts for me:
  • The first bass track I ever wrote, before I was even a bass player (at that point I was and had been a drummer in all my bands)
  • The first song I ever demoed on my own, in my (then) new home studio
  • The first song we wrote and arranged for my current band
The verse bassline (heard in the second verse) is pretty weird. None of the downbeats are played on the chord root notes. Instead the bass line slides around, following the drum track in a pretty strange way. I think it works, but who knows? Like I said, this was my first attempt at recording, writing or really even playing bass, and somehow it stuck around for five years, all the way until the song was recorded and released.

I wrote and recorded both bass and drums for this album; both on the early demos and on the album.

(I also demoed a guitar track, but that did not stick around. For some bizarre reason he wanted to "play it his own way". Pfft, guitar players.)

I'll go ahead and add on some new stuff from my trio. We are playing a bunch of shows in Chicagoland this summer and fall and hopefully some more tour dates next year. We also have a new album on the way produced by and featuring the always amazing Tim Lefevbre. Shoot me a PM for more deets!
