I rolled the dice! GC And Stingray content...

Although with caution I can make adjustments to neck relief myself, I'm not sure my skills extend to being able to diagnose a broken truss rod, no matter how much time they give me with my new purchase there in the store. Good on you for spotting it!

I can’t diagnose a broken one, but if the bass won’t adjust easily I probably won’t buy it.

That is good intel. Have you ever decided against keeping an item after inspecting it at your home store?

I have. Just one bass, sounded like crap so I returned it on the spot.

That picture is the best they can do?

in this case, it may be intentional.

Nice! Every once in a while you're able to come by a great deal at GC, I have on cabs before because they just want to unload them quick for the room. Nice score, you'll have to let us know all about it when you finally get it in your hands. I have said it before but man I love the black body and maple neck look!

I have. Both were G&L basses, one LB-100 and one L-2000. They ended up hanging both on the wall and they eventually SOLD. As much as I despise GC, shipping from store to store is one of the most under-rated services they offer, IMO. I still use regularly the SWR Strawberry Blonde I bought from TX using the same service. Good luck!

Last time I inquired about shipping a bass from store to store, they wanted to charge me $40, so I said forget it.

I’ve had very good luck with used purchases online from GC. My last purchase was a used Stingray 4HS with a natural finish ash body and tort pickguard for $900. I called the store in advance and they gave me an in-hand description, after which I purchased online. I got a great price and the bass was absolutely immaculate. I had a very similar experience buying a Fender Am Deluxe Strat - tobacco burst ash body - for $800. Older model with SCN pickups and S-switching. Nearly mint.

Good luck.

I bought a 1970's Guild JS-II bass at a great price from Guitar Center Hollywood. The listing actually said it was in "excellent, near mint" shape. When it arrived at my local shop and I unboxed it, the fretboard was barely attached to the neck and there was a handwritten hangtag note attached to it saying something along the lines of "bad neck and truss"... needless to say after waiting for it, tying up the money, and then two hours of drive time between home and my local GC on my day off, I was pretty annoyed. I can understand an oversight if an employee doesn't know what to look for, but the bass even had a note on it mentioning the obviously detached fretboard and messed up neck! The photo was the usual front-view and awful quality so there was no hint at its condition. After wasting so much of my time and energy during that incident (without any sort of attempt on their end to make up for it), I don't bother having them ship in anything anymore, unless it was a rare posting with actual good photos or a slightly detailed description, indicating that the employee who wrote it knew their stuff.
All that said, there's always a chance that you've scored a good deal on this one and I hope you have!

judging from the slight matchbooking on the body, I'd say it was built sometime in March 2008. However, this is clearly their 'Pure Ebony' color, which replaced the 'Crystal Black' on March 23rd, 2008. So I can conclude this bass was built the last week of March 2008.

Another vote for the bass in the OP being a fake. The logo doesn't seem to match any that were ever released (non-transparent "Musicman", Ernie Ball text above it, and full "Sting Ray Bass" title mostly straight). The closest is the Classic logo, but that follows the arch of the headstock whereas this is too straight. String tree is in the wrong place. Tuner stems seem too long. Heel seems too square. The body almost seems legit, pickguard screws are in the right place, small bridge unlike the big ones copies usually have, control plate matches up. Can't see the neck joint to get a look at the truss rod wheel and how the squared heel matches up with the pickguard though.

I rolled the dice on bass the same time as you from GC. Mine just arrived today, and I am ecstatic! I hope your purchase goes as well as mine did.

PS: It didn't happen yet and I am a liar since there are no pictures. Please wait for a NBD post later.

It's astonishing how bad both the pics and descriptions are on the GC site. I've had good experiences so far.
One bass listed as having no case arrived in a nice perfect condition hard case. BONUS! it is a dice roll for sure, but one I am willing to take.
