It is clear that something is horribly wrong with me.

When all you eat is junk food, your body craves good food but you only register it as hunger and continue to load your stomach with more junk instead of piling in greens, fruit, lean proteins etc, ie the stuff your body really wants and is sending out distress signals to try and get it.

If you're GASing for ridiculous stuff, maybe you need to target-identify what sonic nourishment you really need — be that simply more practice, or some basic non-glamorous quality gear such as decent cables.

I don't know, just taking a shot in the dark.

Aren't those the ones made out of expanded foam?

If so you shouldn't get it because one ding and foam will chip out everywhere.
Also they sound poopy. Like a bass made out of rigid expanded foam. Yuck. Terrible. Anyone who says wood doesn't matter should be forced to own one of these piece of craps

They're really light though and if you want to smash a guitar without breaking your arm then they are a fantastic choice.

Some of the later ergodynes were actual wood and those might be alright

No, I have quite a few vintage fenders, danos, etc ...lots of great basses that fill my gigging needs perfectly. So I've got the "meat and potatoes" completely filled. It's for some reason that I am craving the sour patch kids and gummy worms.

Luthite

United States Patent: 5905219

They've always felt "normal weight" to me ...and honestly, basses made with luthite typically have inexpensive preamps and pickups, so tonally they start at a disadvantage . One of the satriani model guitars is made of luthite (has passive electronics) and sounds quite good...in the hands of a good player of course.

GAS works in mysterious ways. My new J-Bass got nicked up at a recent jam so my GAS tells me "You need a jammin' bass". There's pictures on the Rumble Club thread but it was a blonde Squier CV 50s that was irresistible and I got it the next morning. My GAS also reasoned with me that the 500W Rumble head I bought wasn't really a 500W head without a second cab. GAS wins again. The thing that really has me worried is all of a sudden I want to put flats on the new P-Bass. Spooky. Where do ideas like that come from?:)

Lately I find myself having buying urges that I've never had before, and probably shouldn't have. Ridiculous things, like I'm currently wanting an Ibanez Ergodyne 5 string bass ....something ive never even come close to desiring. I'm not sure ANYONE desires the Ergodynes. What's next, a 7 string with a tremolo ? o_O

I'm pretty sure I need counseling. :rollno:

Hopefully this will pass.

I have a pattern in which I get really hot on a piece of gear, talk myself into getting it and then barely ever use it.

I have to stop. I recognize that it is some quirky attempt to satisfy or bend another internal problem, it doesn't make me feel any better in the long run after I get it, so now I just wait a few days until it goes away.

Whatever is happening, I have other issues to figure out and address instead of these bandaids.

It will pass for you too.

Stay off the "web".

Whoah... that is bad...

I am in the same boat though... just made an impulse purchase of a 4 string Jazz bass...not sure what drove the transaction other than the subconscious urge to fill the imaginary void of the "TB Required Stable of Basses". Plus it played wonderfully, looked cool, had great upgrades, all for a great price. Do I really need it? No. Am I happy? Yes. So, what's the problem?

Yeah, thats expanded foam. Not to be confused with lucite like a Dan Armstrong. I've seen a TON of these broken, and repairs don't work out well on them. Joe Satrianis chrome boy was Basswood, and IIRC even after his original was stolen he got another Basswood one. The ones we can buy are luthite because the chrome stays put better. Maybe Joe plays one sometimes, but I know he favors the original Basswood heavily. I'm sure he'd sound fine playing the foam guitar, he'd sound alright playing a guitar built from old crusty socks. Jeff Gordon can probably drive a '98 Kia Sephia alright too.

Heres a pic of a broken one now. If it gets bumped a bit, you'd better research chemical reactions before you glue the chunk that falls out with anything...
