It is clear that something is horribly wrong with me.

Our reach needs to exceed our grasp..................

...or what's talkbass for? :D

I feel ya... my shoulders hurt so bad I can hardly play more than 5 min... and that's on a short scale... maybe a min on a standard scale... I now leave all the bass playing to my daughter.

My shoulder problems have been going on for a while. Yet... I've bought or traded for bass guitars that I think look cool or always wanted to try or just because...

my shoulders, too - i play sitting down, and mostly short scale, although my modern player dimension seems shoulder-friendlier than other long scale basses.

Yeah, thats expanded foam. Not to be confused with lucite like a Dan Armstrong. I've seen a TON of these broken, and repairs don't work out well on them. Joe Satrianis chrome boy was Basswood, and IIRC even after his original was stolen he got another Basswood one. The ones we can buy are luthite because the chrome stays put better. Maybe Joe plays one sometimes, but I know he favors the original Basswood heavily. I'm sure he'd sound fine playing the foam guitar, he'd sound alright playing a guitar built from old crusty socks. Jeff Gordon can probably drive a '98 Kia Sephia alright too.

Heres a pic of a broken one now. If it gets bumped a bit, you'd better research chemical reactions before you glue the chunk that falls out with anything...View attachment 1149884

Not all of them were made of couch foam. Some were wood. :smug:

Compared to chemical or other kinds of dependency, this is healthy. If it turns into a situation where you spend money you don't really have, that's called compulsive shopping, which is a real thing. Other than that, You're just showing interest in the tools of your chosen trade. In other words, it's not a problem unless it's a problem...

I'm happy and in a comfortable space. Then along comes a real beauty, great vintage, just the right size and with the right features and I have to have her.

Same thing happens with basses.
I'm type Bb

That's normal, right ?

Possibly... I have adopted Ao as my blood type, having been called it all these years.

I hear you. I have a fantastic Spector bass, yet I can't stop obsessing over this Ibanez 4 string at a local resale shop. It's got a killer price and esp for an upper end model, but it still doesn't compare to my Spector, but still....

When all you eat is junk food, your body craves good food but you only register it as hunger and continue to load your stomach with more junk instead of piling in greens, fruit, lean proteins etc, ie the stuff your body really wants and is sending out distress signals to try and get it.

If you're GASing for ridiculous stuff, maybe you need to target-identify what sonic nourishment you really need — be that simply more practice, or some basic non-glamorous quality gear such as decent cables.

I don't know, just taking a shot in the dark.

That's why I dress up as a banana, when I play... my chops provide the protein, and the banana gives me plenty of potassium...

Edit: Not me, folks... this is the only thing I could find to get my point across... and the Van Halen poster is pretty cool, too.

GAS is something alright...

I'm very happy with my basses and am having the biggest issue with pickup envy at present.

Do you gig? Does this gear bring you and your audience joy? Does your significant other feel threatened by your spending?

I try to focus on the end result of all of these fancy little gizmos and make sure that they translate into musical joy rather than simply being shiny distractions.

No judgment implied- but this helps me to keep things in perspective.
