JIO vintage hybrid bass

I see a need for a "Faker" stamp in a particular font.
The above top pic is my '66 J. I built it up (actual '66 J body, custom neck) 11yrs ago, before Gotoh offered their pops. A guy on eBay used to modify standard clover-paddle tuners by grinding off the top 'bump' and polishing the edge - turning them into pops. He did good work and you have to look very close to tell how they are different. I had two sets made that way.

You won't get that much  - somewhere around $100 or possibly a bit more.
I honestly think that's too much for any set of tuners, even new. Also people are trying to sell individual Ibby tuners for like $50-75 each. Ridiculous.

It's the liver-shaped tuners that bring in the big bucks...
Personally, I'm holding out the for the set - one liver, one kidney, one spleen and one colon.

Ordered a nice flamed (Western Big Leaf) maple billet for a more exotic-wood body. I saw it and envisioned something gilded, which I haven't done for a while. It's .85" thick, so it will be a top/table on a two layer body, most likely mahogany for the back. This gives me freedom to chamber - to keep the weight down and give it acoustic resonance. Possibly incorporating the Johnson neck? We'll see once it arrives.

I never tire of looking at sweet grain and figure!

I like looking at exotic-wood basses as much as the next guy, but I'm not drawn to them personally (for basses I play). Seeing this example with the cascading figuring inspired me to do something artistic with gilding. Something blue, because it reminds me of water. We'll see.

I'm willing to pay $100 for a set of lightweight, nicely engineered tuners: Gotoh GB350s or Hipshot Ultralights.

One can buy cheaply made generic MIC tuners all day for very little, but I agree - anything under $100 for a nice set of quality tuners would be considered a bargain. Gotoh and Hipshot make quality tuners.

It really is a personal thing. The wide range of ultra-cool finishes you have done make it very clear that your artistry provides different and wonderful options that can be way more interesting than simple wood. Your finishes have a pizazz that is missing from many exotic-wood instruments.

:) tanks man! The only other time I did a sorta exotic (spalted maple) wood / gilded mix was one of my first Gildaxe custom basses from over 10yrs ago. Pat Wilkins did the final finish - my first dealing with Pat. I call this finish "shatter-burst". The person who bought it years ago said; "it's following him to the grave". Can't get a higher rating than that! :woot:

Got pics of the maple neck from China made for this bass - it's maple, it has a set-back paddle hs and 24 frets. I'll know for sure once it arrives if my requested dimensions are correct. :) I asked for a fb ramp but I can't tell if they did that. If not I can do it myself - no biggy.
