Kinal Owners Club--Custom to be built

I am pretty sure Mike will do whatever you want within reason, the bridge, neck and fingerboard were hand made for my bass and I believe it's close to 19mm.

My original idea was to do a 6 with 18mm spacing but we both agreed we'd have to increase the scale length to get a decent B string which isn't what I was going for.

I think a 6 string 33" with 18mm would be cool. BTW that's the spec on my Pavel which I didn't have when I spec' this bass out.

We are on stay cation starting Aug 1 and full intend to drag this baby on the boat and to the beach. Pop by we are proudly not leaving the island or wearing socks all week!

Absolutely. I did a bit more than the standard spec but still very reasonable.

Looking back at all the build pics and talking to other owners I suspect this is going to exceed my expectations.

What a pleasure to work with a small builder who held my hand through every step in the process.

What's the bridge spacing on the Compact 5/6's?
As Peter said, Mike will pretty much do anything you ask within reason. He's been building longer than most people know...I think it's around 40 years. He doesn't use CNC machines...everything is completely handmade. I have had four of his basses, and have foolishly sold two of them...but I still have two left that are my main players, along my Sadowsky NYC. If I get another bass in the future, I'd say there's a pretty darn good chance it will be another Kinal.

Wow Wow Wow. It is exactly what I wanted and more than I expected.

All that short scale warm ness. Big round airy notes. Crisp clear nylon string guitar type clarity.
Glad you love it! I know you used Thomastik Acousticores, but I'd seriously recommend some Labella White Nylon Copper or Gold. Maybe when it's time to switch strings...

Dave,

I actually wanted to use a set of Labella DTFs, a short scale set E-C, it's a special order I am still waiting on from BSO. The TI acousticores feel really different (wierd) but they sound great. I am obviously going to give them time to settle in and for me to get used to them.

I think the white nylon coppers or golds would be awesome on that bass. I think DTFs may be too dull sounding. I know you tried the black nylons, but the whites are different. If you get them, remember the tension is way lighter than the gauge. The DTFs or black nylons probably won't have much top end. The whites will give more of an acoustic tone. That's what I'd use, if I had a Kompact.

I actually really like the tone, the strings feel like they roll a bit, acousticores don't come in a short scale set so these I believe are cut down from the regular 34" set. Honestly I'm not going to worry about strings for a while. Wish I was home playing her instead of working.

Ordered a replacement E for the acousticore set and a 30" scale copper, light gauge, white nylon set. Also have a set of labella DTFs on back order.
Sweet! The lights are really light, don't let the gauges fool you. I think mediums would be better, especially on the short scale. Coppers are darker/warmer/growlier than golds which are brighter/more acoustic sounding.
