Kinal Owners Club--Custom to be built

When you say more acoustic sounding do you mean acoustic guitar or upright bass sound?

I'm not afraid to play with strings, we will see how this first round goes. Right now I have a steel core E string temporarily and don't love it.

Think acoustic guitar strings meet tapewound. Coppers are punchy and warm, still somewhat bright. Haven't tried golds but they are supposed to be brighter/more lively. These are not upright sounds...that would be the black tapes.

I had the blacks on the lakland hollow 30" didn't like them at all.

We will see between the acousticores and the white coppers it will give me a point of reference to see which way I lean.

I am not going to use this bass in any traditional band settings just played solo or small jazz groups maybe with acoustic guitars and such too.

Really the goal isn't much different from lokires YouTube clips.

White nylons are way brighter tonally than the blacks. More tension than the Acousticores, which have a nylon core. I have the light gauge on my Linc Luthier 5-string, but will probably go to the mediums and change to the high C tuning. The tension is much lower than roundwounds of the same gauge.

Thanks for the examples. That fretless mwah is like nails on a chalk board though. I can hear the difference but not sure how that will translate to my bass.

Sorry my ear is really just over that fretless sound for whatever reason.

Really loving the bass overall and the white copper nylons. While I consider myself very flexible when it comes to string choices the TI Acousticores just don't work for me. After really settling in and enjoying the coppers I went back to the TIs and confirmed the way they roll under my fingers just doesn't work for me.

Edit: Was always interested in the Kompact. Contacted Mike this week; lead time is 8 months. I'll be 74 years old in 9 days. Who knows if I'll still be here in 8 months. Anyway, Thinking of offering to trade a Roscoe SKB 3005 unlined fretless for an unlined fretless Kompact. Probably get a Kompact sooner by selling the Roscoe and ordering from Mike. Please excuse the rambling.

Best of luck, place the order enjoy the wait.

To update this thread, I had Mike make me a 32” scale fretless 6. That was some time ago now. And I sold the fretted 5 as I’m only playing 6. I’ve been planning on ordering a fretted 6 but the pandemic got in the way. I need to reach out to Mike.
