Musically speaking, I can’t stand U2. I think it’s just about the most bland music out there. I received their free album via ITunes a few years back. Hated it. So, do I hate myself for not liking U2? Or, should I hate myself for not liking U2? Seems to me that what is being preached here is hate veiled in benevolence. Somehow, I am told I am a P.O.S. for not liking something, and that seems far more negative than just letting me have an opinion on an f’ing band.
I really can’t stand U2....in a musical sense. How is me having to listen to you explain to me why U2 is great going to make me happy? Seems like it would just make me frustrated having someone tell me I’m a self-hater because I don’t agree with their point of view. Just doesn’t make sense.
I don't get Bon Jovi.
But that's not the point, so um.
Never mind.
What’s interesting is I never said I don’t understand why people like U2. I totally get it, and I get why I don’t like them.I really can't stand U2.
However, I totally get why people do.
I'm not going to explain it to you, because apparently, you will interpret it to mean I think I have insight into your psyche.
Whereas I thought they had songs with lyrics some people identify with; a style rich in textures, and are connecting with their audience.

I feel as though you assume people must have something wrong with them when they disagree with you. You assume they don’t understand. That is a problem in itself that you need to work on. Just trying to be helpful, as you are.
And, also, how are you better than the bashers when you yourself are doing that which you protest against? This thread is just stupid, no offense, I’m out.
“There is nothing to get. If you think you are in some way in aposition to judge their technical skill, artistic merit, or value to the human race, you are simply WRONG.” -MellowinmanI never said anything I didn't say.
The thread is not stupid. I have assumed nothing. You have misunderstood pretty much everything I have posted here. You and I agree that we don't like U2. We agree that we get why people like them.
My point, and you seem to be in complete agreement, is that you don't have to like a player, band, artist, entertainer or whatever to "get" them, specifically why people like them.
And I didn't start this thread about bands/artists/entertainers anyway; I started it about famous, influential BASS PLAYERS.
How could another bass player not "get" the appeal of Verdine White, Paul McCartney, Sting, Jaco, Flea, Wooten, Wilkenfield, Spalding; anyone who actually ACCOMPLISHED SOMETHING NOTEWORTHY in the same field we are involved in?
- There are no famous bass players I don't get. I don't get why there are threads bashing Verdine White and Steve Harris, or any other famous bass player on a forum called Talk Bass. These players elevated bass guitar to make the general public aware of the instrument, and thus, deserve their fame. There is nothing to get. If you think you are in some way in a position to judge their technical skill, artistic merit, or value to the human race, you are simply WRONG.

It’s basically this excerpt, followed with that first comment, that has shaped my view of the thread.
Good. I look forward to more of this craziness in the future, and I guess I’ll abstain from trying to “get” you.I don't care.
