Looking for Recordings: Fender J With Flats

Yeah, was thinking the same thing. At some point he switched to rounds but I think the first two albums at least were with flats.

He didn't switch to rounds on his Jazz until after Zeppelin, per an interview he gave Guitar Player Mag in 1977. His single coil P, his Alembic, and his Bec Var 8 string were all rounds. That said, the first two albums, as well as The Song Remains the Same, are the only albums that I think can be clearly attributed to the Jazz bass and no others. After that, he started mixing things up a bit in the studio.

Here you go…

Indeed any Bootsy with the JBs era James Brown. You can add Bootsy with Parliament to that list.

I put low tension labella flats on my J bass today… it was a revelation.

What players have recorded a Fender Jazz with flat wounds? The more genres the better. Links would be appreciated. Live or studio.

Besides Joe Dart on Dean Town… that’s a given.[

I read an interview with John Entwistle where he said My Generation was a Fender jazz with La Bella flats.

There is lots of reggae recorded on a jazz with flats. All of Bob Marley's catalog for one example. Bob Marley's bassist Familyman also played on a lot of other artists' material as well.

Robbie Shakespeare also used a jazz during his career, though he is known to have used other basses as well.

Also the Roots Radics' bassist Flabba Holt recorded with a jazz on many reggae songs of the late 70s and early 80s.

Here's Flabba backing Gregory Issacs

I saw a recent interview with Flabba where he said he uses rounds but never changes the strings and of course uses a foam mute, so they may as well be flats.
