Monitoring solutions I can bring on my own

Which of those solutions makes sense?

  • Non-isolating ear-buds feed from pedalboard

  • In-ear monitors feed from pedalboard + FOH mix

  • Small monitor feed from pedalboard

  • Small monitor feed from pedalboard + FOH mix

  • Other (please comment)

Everything else he could hear from the air you say. What kind of IEMs was he using? I guess you'd want some isolation but not much, so you can hear but not need to raise the volume too much.

He was just using shure 215s. He didn’t run them too loud. He was pretty self-absorbed so wanted to hear himself with a little of the band thrown in

Is anyone else complaining they cannot hear your bass on stage?

As others have stated, a loud bass combo (GK or Fender Rumble) would be perfect for your quick setup time requirements. Get it on a stand and point it at your ears. Two 210's and a small 5lb head does not take very long to setup either. Nearly every other idea you are coming up with is far too complex, will not give you what you truly need, and will take LONGER to setup.

That's why I have a stereo ambient microphone in my IEM kit. It lets me blend in some stage sound (actually, I can run with just the ambient mic if the monitor feed goes wonky). Works great, and I have much better control.

In our band PA we have an "ambient" channel, with a mic that faces the audience, that goes only to our IEM mixes and not out the mains. That way we can hear the room and not be totally isolated.

What kind of mics do you guys use for this?

Live amplification in one ear to capture that live bass amp tone, ear-bud in the other for vocals/some instrument presence.
Only one gig this summer I felt the un-plugged ear got lightly abused by the volume of the mains..
yeah, DON’T use that approach! Why? Because the human brain likes balance and one will always turn up the bud in your ear to “balance” the external source, defeating the whole purpose behind using IEM’s.
