New amp day: Fender Rumble Studio 40

A "gate" is mentioned in the user manual but there isn't any description of what it is.

Page 14:
"Additional amp and control settings can be found by continuing to scroll through the CONTROLS LAYER of various amp models within the presets. These consist of “deeper” parameters such as (depending on amp) compression sag, bias and gate controls."

Yes, John, I'd take that to mean that a noise gate control is available on those virtual amps that are modeled after actual amps that have that control. That's quite a level of detail in the modeling, isn't it? And when it says "such as" sag, bias and gate, it makes me wonder if there are others not even mentioned! Certainly leaves room for others in future, downloadable models. Hmmm ...

It's likely a variant of the Mustang or perhaps just the Mustang in different clothes.

It's odd that the the user manual is so sparse on details.

Oh, yeah, the Rumble Stage & Studio are definitely bass versions of the Mustang amps, these days. It makes more sense than the previous versions of the Mustang not appearing to have anything to do with the, now discontinued, Bronco 40 bass modeling amp and it's predecessor, the B-DEC 30 bass modeling amp (though that was obviously related to the G-DEC guitar modeling amp).

After the Rumbles were introduced about this time last year a video surfaced that looked for all the world like a bass being played through a Mustang. Maybe a prototype? Heck, they both use the same Fender Tone App for total wireless remote control. And the two latest amps in both series, just introduced? The Rumble LT25 and the Mustang LT25!

Sparse manual? To thoroughly explain everything they'd have to include most of the manuals for all the amps, and stompboxes and effects they've modeled. It'd be a pretty thick book, if not a few volumes! Besides, nobody reads the manual, anyway.

I've got a ZOOM B3; and a V2 Rumble 75 (modified and punked out) to trade. I was also thinking of adding my Rumble 200 in. That ought to be enough. Would really like to keep the 200, but ...

I had the Zoom as well, but compared to the effects in my Studio Rumble 40, they sound like junk. The sound controls in the amp are super clean and so much easier to edit via smartphone, tablet or laptop.

And if you get the MGT-4 pedal, it activates the on-board looper and bypass tuner (worth it for the tuner alone).

Is the "gate effect" a noise gate?

It's a lot like a noise gate, but I find it's not as effective as my rack-mounted noise gate. The hardware gate is infinitely adjustable (there are dials), and the on-board "gate" effect on the Studio amp is "None" "Low" "Medium" "High" and "Super." Which is kind of disappointing as most other effects are adjustable from 1.0 to 10.0 in 0.1 increments.

Low is barely noticeable, and High and Super introduce a lot of clipping at the front of the intonation--and not in a good way. I mostly stick with the hardware option.

Fascinating! Do you find the on-board "gate" effect available with all amp models, or only certain ones? How about "sag" and "bias"?

For example, are these effects available when using a non-tube amp model, such as the Rumble V2 or V3?

That's a good question; I can check later today.

But I rather suspect the feature is available on all modelling profiles--I just did a quick check, and here, take a look:

Wow, Ok, those were huge. Screenshots from iOS version of the FenderTone app which runs the Studio 40.

Hmmmm, ... Many thanks, @FriendlyFiver!

So, the Noise Gate seems to be a global effect? But, you can even change the position of the gate in the signal path? Like a pedal effect? Still more fascinating!

Would be very interested to know if the "bias" effect is also available on non-tube amp models, and likewise seemingly global.
