Official Ampeg Portaflex Club

They never tell you this in the manuals but it’s best to bias by turning clockwise up to the bias point. If you overshoot, go back down and turn clockwise up. Why? Pots have slop in them. You want to keep tension on the set point.

Play for 20 minutes or so before setting the bias. This will ensure that the components will be warm and not drifting.

If the wall power goes down, as it can on some days, the optimal bias will change. Don’t worry about always checking it. But if the amp sounds a bit off, check the bias. This can happen in some venues with low line voltage when lights and all the equipment is powered up.
Update: Ampeg sent me a new amp. I still don’t know what went wrong with the original amplifier. My dealer said over the last month or so Ampeg gave him a new rep which is why it’s taken so long to get authorization to send the amp back, etc. They agreed that since I had waited so long for them to get back with my dealer, etc., they would just send me a new amp. I picked it up today, and it sounds great!

Good news! Patience paid off.
