My experience with the hohner-made Steinberger designs is positive. I've seen half a dozen over years of working at a buy/sell/trade music shop and they were always solid and usually played and sounded good.

I concur strongly! I've owned a B2V from the late 80s/early 90s since 1992 and it JUST KILLS! Nice woods... thru-body design... Steinberger-licensed hardware.

However, mine doesn't look like a 'berger anymore -- the paint had been stripped and re-painted multiple times before I acquired it and the pickups were dead. So I threw in a set of EMG 40 series humbuckers had it re-finished in a fun way. I also had the frets yanked and the slots filled with epoxy and rosewood dust.

This thing is ridiculous now. Despite all the abuse before I took ownership, it's an incredible player.

I'll never part with it.

I dig the rainbow trout paint job!

Maybe someone can clarify, but I don't think Hohner is producing their headless basses anymore - I haven't seen new ones in quite a while, just used ones and even then, prices of those have also gone up. I do see Steinberger Spirit basses brand new on several musical instruments websites, I don't see Hohner ones.

I have this bass and its sounds great. Its a 4 string. Was wondering if it okay to tune the strings to B E A D. Thanks

You can do it with the strings on there right now but you won't be happy with it. They'll be too floppy. Do this:

Buy a 5 string double ball set.
Throw away the high "G"
put on the B, E, A, D strings
tune up
will require intonation, but it has a zero fret so you won't have to do anything to the nut.

Those basses are great. If I find one I'm buying it.

PS took a good close look at your pic and your intonation is all messed up anyway, so it's not like you're going to wreck anything by doing this.

Hohner hasn't made them in a long time, not since sometime in the early 2000s. They are better than most of the small, woodbody Steinberger clones.

I am going to show photos of that trout paintjob to my Dad, and he is going to flip out.

Bob Batchik out of Michigan did the paint job for me. Bob is a fantastic guy and was absolutely a pleasure to work with on this project. His site is sunfishwoodworks.com. Tell him the guy with the brown trout bass guitar sent ya! :)

Hello!Im new to this talkbass forum. So adding a Low B string will require o adjust the neck?

There will probably be a number of needed adjustments. The change in tension with the new tuning and different thickness string might mean the truss rod could need adjusting (tightened if you have too much forward bow, loosened if you don't have enough). The new tuning will probably mean the intonation will need to be adjusted so the notes are in tune all they way up the neck. There are great threads here on TB for how to make these adjustments.

I sent my Dad a link to the photos of your brown trout bass, and he loved it. He's not a bassist, but he appreciates art and whimsical paintjobs more than most. He totally related to it. Seeing those photos made my day too, so thanks for posting them!

Excellent! Happy I could help you and your dad have a fun moment! That's awesome.

Are either of you fishermen?

My Dad is. Despite his best efforts, it didn't really take with me, but I had some fun times tagging along while he did it. He got into a pretty heavy art/drawing/painting phase for awhile and trout were a pretty prevalent theme...he did some pretty cool christmas cards at one point that had a sort of ring of swimming trout drawn on them, like a trout wreath. Wish I had one handy to scan and post. Anyway, he spent a fair amount of time trying to capture the complexity of various trout coloration on paper with various art media, and I knew he'd see that super-detailed and textured paintjob and dig the hell out it.
