If Squire sold the walnut CV 70's with a rosewood board it'd be the perfect 70's P bass. Ive got one but Id much prefer rosewood. That chunky profile is crying out for RW.

My recent NBD post really got me thinking. If Fender were to make an accurate late 60s / early 70s Precision Bass reissue with the correct overall specs, period accurate finishes, and U.S. made, Who would be interested in picking one up?

I have posted about this very topic multiple times, it seems I am not alone in this consensus. This is one of the only classic models that Fender has never made a proper and authentic reissue of.

Maybe they will finally give us one with the new line that will eventually replace the current AO line.

Who here would like to see this done? Thoughts?

I would love a proper 70's reissue. I bought a CIJ PB-70 because there isn't anything comparable in the US line.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I'm not a fan of the '60's stuff. I don't like the threaded saddles or the wider neck.

I mentioned in an earlier post how the 70's pickups were different (perhaps hotter?) than earlier pickups. Is there any kind soul out there who knows any company that replicates the 70's pickups?
Seemed like EVERYONE in the 70’s swapped out whatever Fender put in for a Dimarzio Model P (was there anything else?). That’s the sound of a 70’s P to me, and still my favorite pickup.

Here's a lake placid blue 1970 precision

I believe it was once Lake Placid Blue, but at this point, I'd call that "Swampwater green" - that thing sure has changed over the years. Is there an "edge" in the finish on the body around the perimeter of the pickguard? It looks like someone may have sprayed clear (that yellowed over time) on the thing.

Good question. In one of the side pictures i see a darker blue under the greened clearcoat that is different from the blue under the pickguard.

My first bass was a ‘75 Precision and I had it for over 30 years. Joined here in ‘07 to sell it and have been here since. I don’t think the older basses have any kind of special sauce about them. They’re just old. There were a LOT of crappy ones out there along with the good. Ever since ‘08 the MIA line IMO is better than it ever has been.

I tried a Nate Mendel sig a few days back. If it is indicative of what a '70s reissue would deliver then there is no point, really.

It's like a modern MIM P Bass with an extra pickguard screw and a cooler headstock decal. And somebody has knocked the shine off the back of the neck. Just a basic P Bass with nothing exciting going on tonally or in terms of feel in the hands. A used Highway One P Bass would net you the correct headstock decal, if you wanted to build a similar instrument.

Interesting take…

Anyway, I’m pretty sure this thread was suggesting a 70s spec MIA, perhaps in the American Vintage line? Which is why I alluded to the somewhat similarly spec’d MIM basses.

As someone else suggested, recent Fenders are higher quality than instruments than vintage, so why not?

The Mendell Specs appear to be quite different than a basic P Bass -
  • Specially contoured ash body with light Road Worn® finish treatment
  • Maple neck with slimmer “C” profile and “F”-stamped neck plate
  • 7.25”-radius rosewood fingerboard with 20 medium jumbo frets
  • Seymour Duncan® Basslines SPB-3 Quarter Pound™ split single-coil Precision Bass pickup
  • Fender High-Mass bridge
  • Extra neck plate engraved with a special hybrid Foo Fighters/Fender logo
