Double Bass Problem with a Luthier (Roland/Emanuel Wilfer content)

I`m not sure how long a double bass needs to acclimate to a new environment, but it might take "awhile".....

Changes due to humidity such as expanding/contracting wood will probably happen over days. Going from humid to dry or vice versa, you'd want to check and adjust if necessary the soundpost and string heights. This is what we do in the midwest and northeast US with the seasons changing.

Berlin humidity today is 84% and San Jose is 100% with rain. I would think the bass will be fine in Costa Rica without major changes.

it so long to do the papers. Hire somebody!!!!

I ordered a double bass 2 years ago and waited 5 months to receive the double bass. Now I have been waiting for a cello for 3 months. I'm waiting for an answer. Two months ago they told me that DHL does not pick up for Canada only for the United States. I will soon go to Germany and have an interview with him. I am sure he is a good man, but what I dispute is the administrative process. Okay, you make some wonderful instruments, but the expedition seems like a very long time to go. If this is discussed on social media, imagine what it can do for your business. My double bottom is very fantastic but why it so long to do the papers. Hire somebody !!!!

honestly, i don’t know how he is in business after this kind of behaviour. I suppose he gets a lot of money from conservatories or more school-oriented instruments.

How is the bass sounding @Tyronimo ?

It sounds really wonderful, it is very easy to play on it, I feel that I have improved a lot with this new bass, the bass does not take up anything, basically the luthier only detailed and shaped the bridge a bit, in his words the bass is of a quality excellent, we were quite surprised to hear it, it has a sound that is quite round, deep and sweet at the same time, The sound is very nutty, it is like honey and butter to my ears, I really can’t explain how good is the sound. Nothing really had to be done to him. I am satisfied, I am sorry that I have not uploaded photos or videos, I have kept myself busy studying and I also wanted to leave this forum a bit aside to forget that all this happened.

Kind regards to all!

You had a very tough journey getting there. All is well in the end. I am happy for you. Congrats on your bass. It will go with you and provide adventures for decades to come.

Hello everyone,
A month ago I payed to Roland Wilfer for a double bass that he had in stock and I haven't heard from him since April 3rd. He does not answer my emails, WhatsApp messages, neither phone calls.
I feel so sad for not knowing about the reputation of this luthier before paying him. I'm very worried about my money...
Any advice would be very appreciated.

If you paid with a credit card, you can "dispute" the charge saying that you haven't received the goods that you paid for. If you didn't use a credit card, then I think your only recourse is to sue him. In the U.S., that would be "small claims court" which is inexpensive and doesn't require an attorney, but collecting is difficult. Here in the U.S., again, with a small claims settlement in your favor, you can sell the debt to a debt collection agency, but you usually only get pennies to the dollar plus the satisfaction that the collection agency will hound him for a long time. In your case, it looks as though you'll have to work through international law for Germany and Spain to determine your options. Best of luck.

@gridchin sorry about yr experience.
Please tell if you paid by paypal, perhaps you can open a dispute and get yr money back or another resolution.

I bought a bass from a Romanian luthier and he needed a bank wire. Very stressful for a week until it shipped. But I had great communication and photos through the whole process so I felt ok.

as for the shipping, US customs requires wood crate to be certified fumigated to gain entry, the luthier said he could double cardboard box it with styrofoam in between the boxes. They wrap the bass in a layer of cardboard that floats the bass inside the box with a few inches of space all around. Pretty impressive actually.

Very sorry to hear that. As other said, if you payed by credit card or paypal contact them ASAP but I guessed that he asked for a bank transfer to avoid fees, blah, blah, blah.
You know I'm in Spain too so if you want to message me, feel free.
