Project Iced Bongo #5

Harry,
The shipping point, I will concede and other kit companies likely add it to their cost so yes I take that back
Bridge ground hole- all I can say is that every other kit which is sold ready to assemble had the bridge ground hole drilled. Because a long drill bit is not something that most people has (I only bought my fist set last week)
Good points though and I would like to maintain my objectivity so should fight my own emotional reaction!

INTP- The passive MM pickups are surprising nice. The set up gives good tonal control. I would not obviously expect this to sound like a real bongo. The ability to select and change tone for each pup get you from heavy thick bass to a fairly bright top end off the bridge. To me it ends up a bit more flexible than the P/J that I have build from a kit. Since it i not fair to compare what you get to an active pup eaualized preamp bass, I would not try but will say this kit and the pups sound really good to me!

MPU- YES! I really wanted to just modify the pickgaurd, I really would have preferred to do just that! The problem was, with the bridge mounted in the correct position for the scale and intonation, and the position was potentially influenced by my aggressive beveling (not by enough to solve the problem) Had I trimmed the pickguard to clear the bridge, I would have had to eliminate, essentially cut through the shape of the entire pickguard, thus destroying it.

I would say that nobody should make a decision whether or not to buy this kit based only on my review! With any kit, you have to expect that you are getting inexpensive components and then you are responsible for making a nice guitar. I must point out though, other kits were much easier to assemble.

Jose- Yes! I do owe you all a final picture. I am really proud, if nothing else, of how unique this kit turned out for me. It actually sounds pretty good too!

I have all the necessary tools so it was not a biggie. The pickguard would have had no bottom on it otherwise! It made it look cool with the top of bridge exactly following the line of the bottom of the guard. I'll have to show it. Give me a couple of hours, I deep into something else.

So I finished up what I was doing (a dip job on a Telecaster) and know that I owe these:

Maybe it will be more clear why I chose to modify the bridge instead of eliminating the bottom of the 3 ply pick guard? Or not! But either way, I think that the shape of the bridge is a unique styling que.

I may have been a bit harsh on my review of this kit, but tried to be pretty honest about it! For the money, just for the body (which I radically carved)and neck it was hard to beat for less than $200 shipped to my door. I hope you agree. Even if this bass is not liked by most, it is very unique which is what I always set out to do.

Thanks for following the build it has been a blast!

All in all, I think it came out great. And yes, your choice to cut the bridge definitely makes sense now and, in my opinion, looks great, too.

What's your plan from here forward?

Looks awesome :)

Sorry to be a pest, but did you ever get around to measuring the string spacing at the bridge? I would be very happy if you told me it was narrower than 19mm ... ;)

not a pest, I'm a rook distance center to center between strings or distance outside to outside of next. Not sure how this is measured!

If you just measure center-to-center from the top to the bottom string, then divide by 5, that's perfect. At least that's how I do it. I think I got that from the Hipshot website, or some other bridge maker perhaps. Thank you!

Will do. . .got my paint gloves on right now and they are sticky with some fresh clear coat. Give me a bit.

Lia: by my measurement with Harbor Freight digital calipers. I get 63 mm from the center of the top string to the center of the bottom string. This comes out to 13mm. I'm assuming that this is an unusual measurement.

If you need others let me know. Sorry this did not come out to anything workable!

The spacing between strings is a little narrow to suit me but it is playable.

oops! thank for the gentle correction INTP. Is there a more precise way I can accurately get Lia the measurement?

Edit to update:

Lia, I measured the best I can with the tools I have and no real knowledge of what we should expect and can find 19mm pretty consistently between the outsides of any set of strings. Space inside of strings is 13. Again likely not precise!

Hope that helps in any way!

I personally think that's accurate enough. If you wanted, though, you could do the following:

You could measure outside-to-outside, then measure the outermost strings' diameters, and then subtract half the diameter of each. This assumes you have some accurate calipers for the measurement.

I wouldn't bother, though...

INTP, did that but forgot to halve the string dia. duh on me.

Sounds like Lia has what is needed.

Thanks for the education!

Now that I am holding this big bass, I feel like playing it. Thankfully the amp is right beside me haha
