Quincy Jones says Paul McCartney was the worst bassist he ever heard

You had me up to the "quality of the song" statement. I mean how do you explain yellow submarine?????

That is a complete pile of crap.

Yeah! One mediocre but memorable song (for Ringo and an animated kiddie movie) proves they were hacks. *rolleyes*

I'll trust the editors of Bassplayer magazine over Q when it come to playing bass and they put Macca at number 3. It's not just about chops or some kid in his basement is better than Jaco.

What does that have to do with the question he was asked? It wasn't a career retrospective.

"What were your first impressions of the Beatles?"

His first impression wouldn't take into consideration their careers for the next decade or so.

One of the funniest things here is how many expect a guy who played with Charlie Parker (if you also don't know who he is, ask Jaco ;)... heck, if you don't know who Jaco is, uncle :D ) to be impressed with an early 1960's rock/pop band. Think about that... or don't.
:D

He's totally off-the-rails in this interview. Comes off as a complete nutjob. What the heck happened to Q? Has he gone senile? SAD!
that's what struck me, too. i read the interview in the NYT or somewhere a couple of days ago. man, he's royalty, goes waay back in the american music world. i played the grooves down to the nubs on the Body Heat record. lot's of others, too. that interview just blew my mind. like you said, really sad. so disappointed.

So Q clarified his comments and said that was just his first impression, but Macca went on to be one of the most important and influential bass players in pop music? Or are you ascribing to him things he did not say and accusing me of doing the same?

Here's a more realistic quote from Q at the time, who had worked with the likes of Charles Mingus, Paul Chambers, etc.:

"I thought McCartney was the **** as far as bassists go . Just listen to "Love Me Do".

Better?
;)

I've been a big Macca fan from the first Ed Sullivan Show (look him up ;) ) show appearance. Nothing Q said takes away from that. At all.

I didn't read the article but I have read this thread.

I'm 50 years old and I've known who QJ "is" for years but I honestly only knew of his work with Michael Jackson.

I just read through his wiki page and he indeed has worked with a ton of artists but although I've listened to 90% of the artists mentioned, I had no idea that Quincy Jones was affiliated with them.

So what you say? I guess I'm just admitting that it is possible for someone who listens to a lot of music and is well over 18 to not really be familiar with all of Quincy's work.

Also, both Quincy and Sir Paul are way more talented than me, LOL
