RedSub Coliseum Fanned Fret 5-String Bass

As we’re back in the topic I want to share you a picture of the neck pocket: as you can see the raw wood of the body and the top are visible.
So we can be sure that it is not a buckeyed birl top.
I mean a real top would be at least 5 mm thick . Here it’s very narrow :meh:
Like a leaf… I was even thinking it is a PICTURE
Indeed Buckeyed birl is pretty fragile and I don’t understand how they could work sutch a narrow piece without breaking it to pieces .
But putting a different picture for each model makes no sense and may be very expensive.
So I actually don’t now what it is.

I’m pretty attempted to sand it, because I actually like the feeling of that bass but that look sucks .
To be followed
Work just started on mine. It is a very thin veneer. I'm moving the pickup closer to the neck and in a slightly different position. Will end up with an orange nitro finish when completed. We're also going to shape it a little more subtle.

Every time I see one of these,I'm tempted to try a sixer out.
But I really don't like the color choices.

(edit)Come to think about it,I could strip it down and torch it in selected spots and put a red/orange translucent finish on it!

What's changed with the new ones is that the headstock doesn't have the natural burl, instead it's a one piece piece of black plastic about 3/16" thick that integrates into the neck. I'll be keying and painting mine but if you were going to get one and do your scorch magic on the body you may have to stay with the black unless you could source one of the previous models with the natural headstock on the used market.

The headstock is of little concern to me at this stage.
All this is just planning and estimating at this point.

Pickups: IMHO sound really nice, (not changing mine - at least not yet) I actually believe that you get a law of diminishing returns on what you pay for pickups. But the good thing is that due to the standard soapbar size (110x35mm) you can cut your coat according to your cloth. The G4M website describes the pickups as 'active' I'm not totally sure that is the case, in fact I emailed them 6 months ago to say I didn't agree and the email I got back was they would amend the description, however it still remains in the description so perhaps they are active? the picture shows the original pickup wires. Hopefully you know your stuff as I'm still a newb and have little knowledge about pickups.IMG_2486.JPG

Pre-amp: If I didn't entirely strip down the guitar before the refinish I was fairly happy with the sound. That said once I've removed the electronics I plan to do a good shielding job on control, pickup and battery box cavities. Because the stock build was a rat's nest (whereas @kodiakblair who has the Redsub says his was lovely and neat with cable ties) here's mine; IMG_2416.JPG
I've non-destructively removed the components rather than @LowEndLobster 's approach to getting the sidecutters out (would have saved me loads of time but I was bought up with a mom who lived in wartime and even in the 60's and 70's I had to eat everything off my plate :vomit:) so I've squirreled them away for a rainy day. I've ordered the Glockenklang 3EQ https://www.thomann.de/gb/glockenklang_3band_electronic.htm (bit more pricier than I expected when I looked in January) at £135. I really don't know how this will sound but I'm sure it will be a bit of an improvement

Hardware: some shonky stuff going on there. The single bridges grubs screws for saddle height adjustment were poor, 9 out of 20 were not adjusting. Luckily it wasn't the tapped holes into the bridge(s) just crap thread rolling on the screws. £6 off Amazon for 20 new ones.
Tuners are not great either, some play in all 5, just splashed out on some Warwicks - £65 but any half decent tuners half the price or less will do much better than the stock.

All in all it's racking up (for me) to £206 ($262, 241.50€) so that'd be the ballpark you would be looking to punt into.
If you are interested in the 6 string they are selling new at £299 ($380, 350.50€) here from G4M 972 Fanned Fret 6-String Bass Guitar, Purple Burl Burst at Gear4music
You would have to add shipping to that if you are not in the UK plus the cost above for the mods and plus the pickups of your choice.
I will say on the 5 string that the neck is sublime, I've never felt anything as nice, absolutely zero fret sprout, joy to play, no fret buzz anywhere, low B is best I've ever heard on any 5 string and the other strings are just as good. Not as deeply fanned as a Dingwall but not as shallow as an Ibanez, I really think there's been some serious thought gone into these models
