Rumble 40 Plus Dirt Pedal Equals...

I know we’re talking about the 40, but I had the 25 with basicly the same experience as some of youse. Too much bedroom tone. Either muddy or boomy, not enough mids, and didn’t like effects. My Peavey Basic 60, while still a practice amp is the opposite in every way. Blander tone at noon, but can be shaped however you want, especially with the effects loop and lots of headroom by practice standards.

As a small update, I've experimented more with tuning my Rumble 40 to my taste. It sounds quite a bit better with batting then it did in stock form. However, it is yet better with the batting and one port plugged. Plugging one port removes the big bass bump. It still doesn't sound stellar, but at least passable and playable. I've been experimenting with tweaking the port tuning as I think somewhere between stock and one port closed is probably better.

I still don't like how it responds to a distortion/dirt/overdrive pedal in front, though.

First of all sorry for somewhat of a thread necro, but this is the closest thing to what I’ve been looking for in all of the interwebs...

Since you seem to be pretty invested in this, do you have any updates with your tuning? I am debating between the Rumble 25/40 and Ampeg 108. I am not too worried about gigging more than very small venues yet (so power-wise I should be fine). I would be playing both bass and guitar through the amp, so the bass bump worries me. I did however like the extra control options ond direct output of the 40. What would you recommend based on your experience/mods?

It seems sterile with an unpleasant top end no matter what I do with the tone controls (pedal or amp).
I'm resurrecting my own thread because I ran into this, again. I'm pretty happy with my Rumble 40 after tuning it up and the speaker breaking in. However...

I just acquired a Tech 21 YYZ pedal and I get some pretty tasty tones through my direct setup. But then I put it in front of my Rumble 40 and it's right back to what I started this thread about. Ick. Something just goes wrong with the top end.
