So...Has anyone here actually beat GAS?

Males have been collecting 'things' for thousands of years. It started with sticks to make spears out of, rocks to make axes, oddly shaped bit of wood to make other things. Eventually as manufactured items became available, this instinctive trend continued - and ended up with you - and others - collecting things like bass guitars. As long as it's not negatively affecting anyone else - or yourself - I wouldn't worry about it...

So, basically, as long as he throws them at someone or something he'll be alright?

Well, I do understand, cause for me having six basses, 3 combos, 1 Roland rig, 1 keyboard amp, and three keyboards plus a few pedals. It's like having to choose among the ones you have because they are strung differently, one bass for one style and so on. but, when it's time to bring them to the luthier for tune-ups and all, it gets pretty expensive. Especially having all my basses Fender and Rickenbacker Americans + one F AC6 Canadian. Yep, the problem is between my two ears. One more bass in the house and it's a divorce case. Hihihi!

Well, for me it's subsided a lot over the last while. I have 20, and they are (mostly parts) permutations of Precisions and Jazzes and 4's and 5's and fretted and fretlesses and regular stringing and BEAD. I kinda stopped when I modded a MIJ fretless Jazz to BEAD. I had a recent flare-up when I had to have a second Squire active 5-string Jazz. It was black with painted headstock and the sunburst I had wanted to be with its twin. I play enough to support my habit, and the rule is, only use gig money. I also have several heads and cabs and combos as well as power amps and pre-amps. Same rule there are well. Damn. After reading all these posts and posting my own, I think I might have to revisit this. But in the morning. Hockey playoffs are on. (Full disclosure: I play some pick-up games and my gig money also pays for my ice time.)

Hello, my name is Joe and I’m a GASoholic...I no longer can clearly say how many basses I have without having to stop and think.

It’s over 15 but less than 20, I think.

Have any of you fine readers actually made it back to the the ranks of only 1 or 2 bass ownership after “collecting” 10 plus basses?

Is there hope?
I’ve had many many basses and have scaled down to 4. I have made a Precision and a Jazz with all fender parts except I have used Seymour Duncan 1/4 pounders and I love them. For 3 to $400 each. I have a PF800 and an Ampeg Heritage. Along with a Pro Neo 2x10 for the PF800 and an 8x10 Ampeg for either. I have a 2x10 Ampeg with Eminence 350 watt Speakers at 4 ohms for both also. I’m very happy with my gear after 42 years playing for money. A few options for the size of gig is all I need. I’ve sold all my high dollar basses because I didn’t need them. I have 7 kids, 2 historical Motorcycles, A 400+HP Street Rod. Chevy SS-10. I would like a vintage Precision or too but I can’t have everything.

I too just use my gig money. I'm retired but pick up the occasional illustration job and I feel that is extra so also fair game for the GAS fund.

Not yet. Various pictures and posts on TalkBass mostly contribute to my GAS desires. I have some really nice basses already but as soon as a new bass enters my home, I can't help but think about the next item in my wishlist.

So far in 2019, I just finished paying for a Spector NS-6H2. I had also initiated a Carl Thompson Fretless Semi-Frills 6 back in January, of which I need to resume sending payments. Then I may need to back off for a little, to allow my wife's blood pressure to return to normal. I might attempt but there's no guarantee of success whether I could actually pull off 3 new basses in a year... But I am already devising a villainous plan toward my next GAS item.

Mostly. Not entirely. I do not have bass GAS for the time being. I do have ribbon mic GAS up to a point for some reason. I bought one in the last year, and probably won't but another for at least another year. That is about as good as I can do to beat GAS. Call it intermission.

I’m in remission right now after a binge last year when I bought 5 after owning 1 for many years. Then I found a support group called TalkBass but I think that made it worse.

I went through MAS (mandolin acquisition syndrome) a few years ago. I bought approx. 10 in about 4 years. I got myself under control and settled on 2.

I'm a guitarist bassists and I thought I was on the right track but, ...no!

I would like to think I have. Maybe it's in remission. I'd like to get a nicer bass someday, but my 2 cheap basses get me paid so I'm gonna play em until they are unfixable / unplayable. I'm just focusing on playing more.

If you are getting paid to play then you are well ahead of the curve! For me this is an expensive hobby / mental condition
