Some Idiot Stole my Bongo!

I don’t leave my basses/guitars unattended at gigs, and, if I have to step away, I ask a responsible band member to watch it for me.

Sorry for your loss!

P.S. Check with the cleaning crew.
This is how I work. In more than 50 years of playing gigs, I have never had gear stolen. I don’t let it out of my sight unless someone I trust is watching it. If we go to eat after a gig I will only go to a restaurant that provides seating with a view of my parked car. If not, I drive on and eat later. I never leave gear in the car at home either. That is NEVER! My stuff will not be stolen.

There was a Rock Lock ~ 12 years ago, but it looks like that didn't survive. Haven't found anything similar other for stands in a retail setting.

EDIT: I was wrong, did another search and it looks like a recent revival of the product: The Rock Lock Guitar Lock will order one and report back if anyone is interested.

My condolences. Having something stolen is a very bad feeling, never mind the loss of the item. Not much more I can say that hasn't already been said, but you have my condolences and I'm rooting for you and your bass to be reunited.

Since this was corporate event and not a block party in a sketchy part of town or a college town, you would think this would not happen. I certainly cannot believe this. The thief was quick and sly. It could be someone also who is a kleptomaniac and the excitement of the risk of getting seen and caught and getting away with it was the motivation, not the value of the bass.

OP, soooo sorry to hear this; it made me sick, as I've had ~$7k of gear stolen once.

I like that lock, although with an inside job, a small bolt cutters could overcome that pretty easily.

My only comfort is that I don't gig expensive basses, like under $600, but still it would suck.

I still have worry about gear that's in the trailer outside.

Oh yeah, it's not high security by any means. But if I can make the guitar player's gear look like a better target, Success! (Sorry guitar players)

I spoke to the coordinator. Ive requested a guest list! That's where im starting. There was security around, I did see that. IF it's still here in the area it would surprise me. I have connections in LE in that town so he's on it as well. Like I said, no one saw a thing. It did teach me a lesson! I am rounding up my gigging basses and insuring them as we speak. I guess I'm a dumb ass for not doing it to begin with. Not having a backup bass would have ended the night and a great party too soon.
That really sucks! Been there, done that. Actually, my wife and I and our two kids moved from LA to Oregon in 1976 a couple of years after I stopped touring. We stayed at her parents house waiting a couple of weeks for our apartment to be cleaned and painted. We were all out one night only to return to the house and find it had been burglarized. The took things like cash, mother-in-law's silver set, and of course all of my touring gear including my 1965 Jazz bass that I bought in 1966 and my Standel piggy-back amp with its ported and reflex 215 powered cab. Never got any of that back and Yes, my '82 Jazz and current my amps and cabs are insured...it still sucks!

It does look like an adequate deterrent to having a bass picked up and walked away with. If someone wants to really take something, they'll find a way to try to. But, this could definitely keep that "spur-of-the-moment" grab at bay.

OP, sorry to hear this happened. Hope you'll be able to recover your bass.

damn, I was hoping that by the time I got to the end of this thread, you got your bass back but it seems not it sucks that someone is so much of a sad individual that they would steal from gigging musicians.

have you tried putting an announcement out on Facebook and getting your friends to spread the word? If the pawn shop hunt comes up dry that might be a good thing to do after the pawn shop hunt.

I’d really like to hear about this. do you think they’d fit four and five string basses?

Also…. as someone who attended dozens of corporate events when I worked in advertising 15 years & then performed at a couple of hundred when I was a full time professional comedian for the next decade and a half… I’m also struggling to understand how this happened at a 800 person corporate event.
I’m wondering if perhaps we have a different concept of what a corporate event looks like.

The events I attended/worked of that size (both here in the U.K. & all over Europe) were inevitably conferences, award ceremonies, Xmas parties, almost always for mid level up to C Suite executives (I think I only did two blue collar functions at all in the entire time and those were much smaller. Perhaps 100 - 150 people).
Some typical examples would be - The Phillips Consumer Electronics Annual Global Conference (the Port Authority Building, Amsterdam circa 2007) or the Fujitsu World Tour (Excel Center London circa 2017) but the key factors that would have made the theft almost impossible without having at least eighty or so witnesses are:

• Events of that size require screens & stages - because the sheer size of 800 people even if they were standing all night rather than seated at big round banqueting tables (as they almost always were - the only exception I remember was attending a Viacom Xmas party for clients where they basically just hired out Fabric night club in London. It was basically just a regular club night except everyone worked either at an ad agency or at Viacom and the drinks were free) create sightline & noise issues which require proper high end staging, P.A., video cameras etc for the speeches/presentations/awards which in turn means a sound crew and/or stage managers who would be watching the stage like hawks themselves because they don’t want their equipment stolen or damaged.

• The stages have to be high because as stated sightlines are a problem. No way is anyone walking onto that stage and off with a 4’ long instrument without at least 10% of those 800 people seeing it happen.

• Events of that size aren’t put on by the managing director’s secretary running around, desperately trying to organise everything themselves. They require a corporate events agency and there would be at the very least two showrunners in the room at any given time.

I’m not saying it didn’t happen by the way.
What I’m actually saying is that unless you & I have a very different concept of what a corporate event for 800 people looks like, there would’ve been loads of witnesses. And if there were loads of witnesses that gives you a chance to get your bass back if you ask the right people, the right questions.

Start with the tech people & the event planner. Move on to the company CEO.
make it clear you just want it back no questions asked

Good luck.

I’ve reached out to ask about that and they got back to me in less than an hour. They’re at NAMM and won’t be back until Monday to get the dimensions. They obviously have the lock with them but not rulers / calipers.
If they are at NAMM they may not have access to rulers or calipers, but you know what they will have easy access to?
Four and five string bass necks
