St. Vincent tour gear?

but with different coloured silks? looks like red on the A & E. Black? or something dark on the D & G.
Jon from GHS was saying that silk used for wrapping bass strings is getting hard to get and companies are taking what they can get, and sometimes they use unmatched colors because that’s all they have. Justin might have another reason why his silks don’t match, but that’s what Jon said.

I just watched Live @ Life Is Beautiful on YouTube last night. My word, the band does the older tunes so well. And, I wasn't familiar with Jason Falkner until now. He's a joy to watch, pristine sounds, sweet axes and just makes everything look so effortless!

Anyway, Slow Disco is heavenly! The whole production of that song by this band is euphoric, but the bass... wow. I'd be curious to know how that bass line came about. I'll be sitting down with it this evening to learn what's going on... I feel it has much to teach me.

Thanks much. Yep, Falkner is my not so secret weapon. Glad I was able to rope him in, as there hasn't been much Beck stuff of late. Re: Slow Disco, I dunno...I just thought of it and threw it together in rehearsal. As the MD, one major component of my mission is/was getting Annie off tracks and samples, and everything played by human hands only. So anything we came up with as far as new arrangements was generated in rehearsal usually as an ensemble effort, jamming section by section and trying stuff.

Hey man, thanks for the reply. I sat down with that bass line a little after posting, and yeah, it makes sense. It's nothing crazy insane but will live on as one of my 'reference' bass lines. My ears are not good enough to catch and understand what's going on at the time, it's just this collective sonic storm coming at me. So I'll hear a bass line, flip out and then I sit down to discover it's wonders and it's like a static three note groove and I'm completely thrown out by everything else changing around it (for example). Something I need to work on as I'm picking up more 'hired gun' gigs and need to refine the process of learning the repertoires.

Oh and a little anecdote that might amuse you:

My rock band was interviewed by a local rock 'zine about a year and a half ago - before Covid. And one of the questions to each of us was if we could play in a supergroup of our peers, who would we pick as our bandmates. My answer was I have a list of drummers topped by Jimmy Chamberlin and Brian Viglione (Dresden Dolls) but I would love to back either Trent Reznor or St. Vincent.

You sir are leaving my dream!! Good work, congratulations :)

Just watched the whole show (Life Is Beautiful) on Youtube. I love how consistent your tone is with all the basses and synth bass changeover through the set. That's something I try to work on at the moment! Also kudos to all the bass fills that never seem to be out of place or too much in the arrangements.
I hope there's a North American tour in the works.

Agreed. I used to love switching basses till I started using dissimilar basses, and I just can't deal with more than a couple due to that very reason. Takes a fair amount of prep work to get levels and tones right, I've come to find out, with separate EQ for everything.

I have to express immense admiration along with intense jealousy that you get to play with two guitar players as talented as Annie and Jason Falkner. The more I watch and listen to Annie play, the more I'm floored by her musicianship and the ease with which she navigates the instrument. And the way her stage persona transforms is so evocative of Bowie, but in her own unique way.

I've been listening to Falkner ever since he released Author Unknown in the 90's - such a brilliant record, and I hope he has some more albums of his own in him. But I'm left wondering how you must feel getting to play with such brilliant musicians? Do you ever just find your mouth hanging open?

As always, it's so cool of you to swing by here and offer some cool insights into how you do things, along with the wisdom to encourage people to find their way in exploring their musical voice through assorted means.

Yes, they're both just so wonderfully brilliant in almost diametrically opposed ways. I don't particularly find my mouth hanging open tbh - these are my peers, after all. But I do get extremely stoked. I'm also the musical director, so there is always a layer of my brain function devoted to analysis and refinement on everybody's part, so that point of view is always mixed in. But in the freer moments, when reckless abandon is flowing, it can be exhilarating to be amongst such great talents, yes.

Man, I hope you get bombarded with this from members here regularly but.....

Thanks for swinging by and posting from time to time.

That is all. Stay safe out there.

That's super kind Thank you. I always appreciate the acknowledgements, it's never lost on me. Just realized I've been working my forum here every day for 14 years this week, so...at least no one could ever say that I didn't care. :)

Just came across this thread and thrilled that the same lineup is doing the European tour. I'm taking my two teenage daughters to the gig just down the coast from me in Bexhill-on-Sea. Can't wait to point and say "look, he's playing my bass!". Already trying to decide where to spend my "Cool Dad" points :)

Aww that's awesome! Bexhill is an odd place for a gig, but I hear that little venue is coming up these days. I've got friends coming from Brighton and Hastings. Thanks and hope you guys have fun!

It's a great venue, saw Wolf Alice there a couple of months ago who were brilliant. It's right on the seafront, so be sure to get there early enough to get some Fish & Chips and eat them on the pebble beach. You can't get a more English experience than that :)

Sounds ideal to me. Yeah, it's Wolf Alice who endorsed that venue to me more than anyone. I look forward.
