Starting to find repeats here on TB

Most of the time, threads have titles that let you know what you're getting into. Don't like it, don't click.

For the cases where the title is vague, read the OP. Don't like it, don't keep reading.

In any case, posting a complaint about a redundant thread is bad form, IMO. Just find something more interesting to spend your time on.

On the plus side, a fresh crop of bassists seem to be joining us here on the best bass guitar forum on the planet. The down side is that all the same arguments, questions and thought starters are coming back up. Why Fender? P or J? Pick or Fingers? Maple or Rosewood? Ampeg or Boutique?
Just a comment more than anything else. Everything old is new again (except me!)
What bass do you think is best for metal? ;)

Things I've learned on TalkBass:

1. The Precision bass is the best. I now own 4 because of TalkBass
2. Tortoise shell pickguards are the best. 2 of my Precisions have them.
3. Thunderbird basses rock! I now own two.
4. Squier is a good bass...I now own none.
5. Have at least one Precision bass strung with flats, I prefer Fender brand.
6. @Killed_by_Death makes me laugh.
7. Refrain from being trolled, as hard as it may be.
8. Maple boards are the best IMHO.
9. I love NBDs, one of the best parts of TalkBass.
10. Some subjects never die, and @Killed_by_Death will link you to the previous thread or the exact same thread.

I'm hardly a veteran here but I think it's great to see new folks and try to be welcoming and helpful.
Even when the same old questions get asked I much prefer to find a helpful link or whatever... I hate seeing 'use the search function' as a reply...
Followed by a complaint about zombie posts if someone pursues a thread they found with the search function...

But I am a bit surprised OP hasn’t noticed the recurring themes on TB before this.

Been that way for years. It’s probably more noticeable to you now because you’ve been on talkbass long enough to see these same questions over and over. I don’t really mind it. I know the folks that have been playing the same p bass and svt rig since the 70s probably hate it but if anything I like to see how the trends are changing. Helps me get better deals on gear and be more aware of where resale values are at. Would also be pretty lame if this forum stopped being a forum where bass players could have these conversations and just became a search engine for the questions.

I joined this forum 17 years ago when I was just a young pup - in life and on bass. I had a sizable hiatus in there, but I recently looked back at some of my first posts. I was absolutely the young kid asking basic and seemingly stupid questions, cracking juvenile jokes, and not using the search function. Still, people offered advice, help, direction, and the occasional reminder that there is a search tool.

We're all rookies at some point. So I see that and try to help where I can, be it with old links, fresh insight, or whatever else I can offer. On the whole, TB is a very respectful community, and there is an insane amount of information and experience lurking within. I'll always do my best to bring something to the table and make it fun to be here.

I also think the moderators have done an awesome job managing the forums and cutting the troll-fat whenever it's possible or justified. I've spent time on a number of messages boards over the years, and this is definitely my favorite.

A thread search denies the opportunity for discussion, which is often what people are looking for in a discussion community. I can easily search for the answers to many of the things I discuss with others. But the point of a discussion forum is often to share opinions and experiences, and I think newer posters also have the right to *discuss* things and not just read about them.

I agree.
One thing I've always found curious is that you get slammed for starting a new thread on topic that already exists, but if you find the existing thread and reply to it, you get slammed for reviving an old thread. Damned if you do, damned if don't. LOL!

Funny how many of the same people that recommend the search function are often the ones that genuinely complain about zombie threads.

I’m a pay it forward kind of person, so I don’t mind helping where I can.

I have considered numbering my responses; tort, or other (1), rosewood or maple (2), Should I buy bass A or Bass B (3)...

The same words do get used over and over, but if it’s your first time hearing them, then none of the other times really matter...

For new folks, I do feel like some forgiveness is due for posting subjects we see super often. When it's a veteran (we're talking 3+ years of posting, commenting, and reading threads) posting a super common one I get a little frustrated with them.

Also in defense of newbies, NOTHING is more annoying than looking for a specific thread and having to sift through pages and pages of off-topic rabbit trails or arguments...so I can understand them wanting a solid reply without having to navigate two or three members endlessly arguing square 4x10 vs vertical 2x10 stacks or whether digital modeling is a viable preamp option. Shoot, even I get tired of that crap or reading through pages of off-topic garbage.
