Summer Solstice Sunburst Triple J - Summer Build Off 2024

The trio together before shaping. I’m going to put one more layer of epoxy on the top of this one to ensure that I completely fill all the gaps between the different wood. After three layers of epoxy I’m still seeing a few little gaps here and there and I want it perfectly smooth before I start to route.

Last coat of epoxy should be dry by this afternoon, so I can finish sanding this one level sand get it into carving.

If anything at this point, it’s not a big deal for me to whip up a batch of epoxy, add some pigment to it and go at it. I’ve used it so much over the last few day, that it’s become second nature just to pump out some and get at it.

How long does the carving cycle take?
I run multiple jobs to ensure fit/finish and bit changes as I go. The top has 9 different files that I run and takes a total of about 50-70min depending on pickups, # switch holes, etc. for everything to run with me checking and bit changes. The bottom has 7 different files and is a complete scallop carve of the back so it will take about 50min total. Approximately less than 2hrs total time and I'm able to work on other things while it is running behind me.

When I go to do this one, I'll run a stopwatch to capture accurate times for both the top and the bottom.

I don't even have to see the majority of your workshop to envy it....

Me? I have 2 collapsible work tables in a shed and a bunch of loose tools... and a vacuum board I made lol

I’ll refrain from posting a full picture or the story of how it happened last year 🫢 it’s definitely my hi-tech laboratory man cave… it’s just so relaxing to head out there with all of my tools, tech toys, TV, sound system and fully stocked mini fridge. 😊 Nice little creative space that makes me feel like “if I can dream it, I can build it”.

A few minor adjustments to tolerances along the way, but the top carve is complete and everything fits nice and snug. I changed up the pot scallop design a bit to make it shallower and a bit wider. One of the EMGs was very different size-wise so I had to file the inside of the tabs down to size… they had a bulge in the plastic on one side.
