Summer Solstice Sunburst Triple J - Summer Build Off 2024

Been busy, but time to do some sanding.

3lbs + hardware

Well, yesterday was a bust with me spending 3+ hours, cleaning up some large trees that fell across the driveway from the huge storms that made their way through. My chainsaw and I got to spend some quality time together getting reacquainted, and my RZR was not left out because the winch was used to pull the trees down and off to the side to be cut down into logs. 😀

Now, with that behind me, I had an opportunity to spend some quality time, sanding and shaping the body. There are some slight crevices in the different woods where I’ll have to use a syringe to shoot some epoxy in to fill the gaps and then do some light sanding. But overall, the body is shaping up nicely. It’s very sleek, smooth very thin on the upper horn and I think it’s going to turn out nice.

The body did shift a bit on the flip so the countersink holes for the neck bolts are a bit off center. Not sure how I’m going to remedy that… I may end up cutting some redheart washers to fit down in and enlarge the countersink a bit, but I’m not sure how that would look, so still contemplating the best path forward to resolve that.

Looking great 👍🏻

Just plug those holes and re-drill, no? They won't be seen.

I wish it were just the holes but they are aligned, it's the countersinks that are off-center so a bit of a different problem to solve.
Ah, I see. With the drop in the body making a neck plate really isn't an option. Could make custom wooden washers with the hole offset. Or fill the countersink holes with ash plugs and re cut them. Wouldn't be 100% invisible but you'd have to look hard to find it...

I'm going to laser cut some redheart washers to fit down in so I can enlarge the countersink a bit. I'll glue them in and sand down so they'll look fine, it'll just be a bit different

Sounds like me. Even though I wasn't in the direct line of a couple of tornados the other day, I still had numerous branches down and one tree. My old neighborhood in NE Ohio got hammered.

Your build is looking great!

August has been a terrible month around here and my time was pulled elsewhere for family issues. But now I’m back at it.

Yesterday I had a good time working out all of my G code for carving fingerboards and do the slotting. I was able to prototype to get all of my settings correct (I detailed all of this in the summer, slamming gig machine thread).

The Dymalux 1/4 inch material is machining really nice and I’m quite certain I’ll be able to just buff the fingerboard once the machining is complete and the frets have been pressed in.

I’m doing hidden fret ends. It takes 10min to radius and cut out the fingerboard and 1min per fret slot, 35-40min per fingerboard. This is my first go at these so I think the time is pretty decent. And no bits were broken on this final carve 😎👍🏼🤘🏼

The asymmetrical neck feels fantastic, it is very thin and comfortable. The Dymalux is very stiff so this is going to be nice once finished.

Neck dimensions at the volute between zero/first fret .73”, 12th fret .83”, heel .85” and 24th fret at the heel/body 1.5”.

The top horn comes to the 10th fret which will make the reach feel a bit more like a 32”.

Weight will be under 7lbs

I had to adjust my fixture to ensure everything was level and used CA+accelerant instead of the glue gun, with much better results.

This is one place where I feel like I've really scored in the past 5 years.... I built a Vacuum board so I can just put a piece on top, cover unused ports and plug in my shop vac and it stays put while I thickness plane or do other work where I've exerting all kinds of crazy forces and the piece stays put...
