Talk me out of buying...

It's a market trend. Basically FETs are old technology. The vast majority of current bass amps are Class D.

I found a thread that indicates the outputs in the DB751 are Exicon ECF20N20 & EDF20P20 lateral mosfets.

Per this article I Exicon has stopped making this class of device: It’s the end of the production line for the lateral MOSFET - Electronics World.
I see. I'm guessing there are not suitable close-equivelents?

Class D amps are ok, some are great, some aren't, but the question I've always asked, but never gotten an answer to is, why hasn't anyone made one that sounds just like an SVT or one of thse DB's? Of all that I've played, GK has done the best job of coming close.

Could Aguilar not issue a new DB amp with a different FET output section, or another type of non class d?

Some believe it's not possible to design class D with the sound and feel of the big Aguilars. Recent threads suggest none of the current crop of class Ds get close. I don't have any current Class D amps in my collection, so I can't really offer any recommendations. I do own some older class D amps: Ampeg SVT 8-Pro, Epifani UL902, Gen Benz ShuttleMax 12.2. IMHO these are all incredible amps, but they have different tone goals than the DB751.

The closest amps in my collection are other big led sleds or all-tube monsters. I believe my Marshall VBA 400 is the closest overall.

I don't think it can be done, or somebody would have done it by now.

I've played the Mesa Subway stuff for years now, its pretty good, I know its a favorite on here, but I think it gets a bit harsh at higher volumes, like a lot of Mesa stuff, it has a baked-in bite.

The DB, any time, any where.

If you're OK with the weight, nobody was ever sad they bought one of the best there is. Too loud? Too much lows? What, those are problems?

The later Aggie amps are fine, but fundamentally different. 751's are elemental and can easily rule any stage if asked.

Try, just try and find a cheap one used. You won't. What's that tell you?

What kind of stuff do you play and what are your tonal goals?

Any issues having to tote a heavy amp around in a rack case?

I had one and loved it, but found the Aguilar AG 700 to be tonal bliss and preferable for portability which is a huge plus if you gig regularly.

Curious to learn more about your preferences and as a former Ag DB 751 can offer some insights from there.
