Thanks. Yeah, it's really down to three depending on the music format.AHH Nice... The Modulus!!!! Yessss Sirrr!!
Thanks to @Crackle for dropping by at The Celt in McKinney last night. We had a great visit. Nice to meet another Texas TB'er IRL.
Thanks Dave. It was nice meeting you also. Your band with Buzz Andrews is awesome!
Hey if yall have gigs coming up please post them. I’d be nice to drop in and not just see the after pics. I’m sure I can’t be the only one…
@Pocket Dave you got any this weekend? I meant to drop in to the prosper one but I ended up stuck.
Are there DFW open jams where the music is not almost exclusively Blues?
I get it that Blues, like Real Book-type Jazz, makes for an easy common ground. I've studied and played in Jazz ensembles, sadly Jazz is not what I look for in an open jam, not my interest and I kinda suck at it, and I haven't played it in yonks.
I like Blues, just not 99% all night every night, ideally there would be more options on variety.
In other places I've lived Classic Rock was the dominant genre, or Acoustic/Singer-Songwriter things like James Taylor, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Mumford & Sons, etc. and not just the One Guy With An Acoustic Guitar thing but whole band settings - these can also be fun.
I play Soul, Rock, Funk and Fusion, and am more in my element where Blues is a portion of the venue's genres rather than the rule. Since I play a wide range I don't want to limit by mentioning this but for example things like Hendrix, Tower Of Power, Little Feat, Aerosmith, Poco, Stevie Wonder, Rush, Vince Gill, Allman Bros, Marshall Tucker, Doobie Bros, Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Smoky Robinson, Santana, Grateful Dead, Buffalo Springfield, Steely Dan, and everything in between. And again, I do like Blues, especially beyond 1-4-5 standard stuff and just not all night.
I've seen and done some of some of these here in DFW but very little.
One place in Grapevine did Rock but stopped having open jams; ones in Carrollton and Flower Mound have mostly Rock but are not always of the caliber as some of the Blues jams, and have some cringy karaoke mixed in. A good one in Allen had a little less Blues-only also stopped, a Rock one at a big sports bar in Addison stopped when football season started.
Lots of great players here, a little hard to find ones with similar interests outside of Blues, I am looking for suggestions. CL, BM and FB have been way more miss than hit.
So what is the format in terms of who plays what when?Bill M, is that you? I was on guitar in the host band at the Lion and Crown in Allen until Thurs night NFL ended the jam last Fall.
You're talking my language.
The Cottage in Dallas has its rotating hosts for jams each Friday nights - I believe I've seen you there. It's sometimes blues, though on the nights when it's my turn in the barrel, I'm seeing the trend toward more variety. This Friday Jim Martin hosts, who was a semi-regular at The Lion and Crown, and plays a variety of lighter classic rock, soul and soulful blues. His house band includes Jared Bacon on drums and Ladell Ferrell on bass. Attendee talent level ranges from mid-level to high. I put together a house band one Friday out of each month - My next will be 7/19 with special guest, Fort Worth's James Hinkle.
You probably know this: Nate's Seafood in Addison has one of the oldest running jams in town Sunday nights, hosted by Jackie Don Loe. Jackie rotates house band members from week to week, all area working players. It's not called a jam per se; It's a "musical happening", but it's essentially a jam. Music ranges from soul to classic rock to Zydeco to whatever comes up. Musicianship of both house band and attendees is high, on average.
The Cottage's Tuesday night jams have recently changed format from mostly blues to a similar format as Fridays with rotating hosts. I'm hosting and throwing together a house band every three weeks, and usually get pulled in as a sideman by one of the other hosts. I'll be hosting this Tuesday with special guest Joey Love, who does a lot of soul and groove oriented classic rock. House drummer this Tues will be the guy who played with us at The Lion and Crown, Cuban born and University of Havana trained percussionista, Idalberto "Bert" Perdomo.
Straight blues jams are cool; It just seems that a LOT of them are out there. At the jams I work, we're continuing to try to offer something a little different. It seems to be attracting some better players. Speaking personally, it appeals to my attention deficit.
