Awesomely good "hand-wired" surface mount PC boards!

How does one hand wire a PC board full of surface mount components?

Lol, a fair question :p So technically all the wiring in each box is done by hand, so I wouldn't be lying if I said hand-wired, but I try to just say "hand-made." Every single component on my boards is still placed by hand, and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. I know surface mount doesn't have as much mojo as through-hole, but it opens up a lot of options that aren't available in through hole packages, as well as allows me to put ridiculous circuits in small boxes.

@Sushi Box FX I may have missed it on the website, but what is the power draw of these tube pedals?

I'm planning to measure everything when I get one of each boxed up so I can get the numbers with the LED, but safe to say the more you can give them the better. I used to say 500mA for a single tube design (Particle Accelerator, Slampegg Bee Pre, London Underground, Lab Rat), but I've had one person so far try a 9V 500mA power supply and it didn't work, so probably safe to go with at least 600mA. The two tube designs generally want about 1000mA, and the three tube design (currently just the Wrecking Ball) wants something like 1200mA or so.

They will all try to pull more than that when they first fire up as the tube wants to heat up as quickly as possible, so the more current you can provide it the faster it will heat up and stabilize to a lower current draw. I've seen a PArticle Accelerator pull as much as 1100mA for about 1/2 a second right when it was plugged in, then the tube heated right up and it dropped to around 500mA. I will always recommend the 1Spot, which gives 1700mA, but I know people like their brick style power supplies, so maybe one of these days I'll get around to designing one of those with a bunch of high current outputs.

Anyone ever try powering a Particle Accelerator or other single-tube model with a Cioks DC7? According to the specs of the power supply it can put out 660MA per output so I think it’ll probably work but would love to hear if anyone has hands on experience.
I run 9V into the PA with a Cioks DC7. It works flawlessly!

My Particle Accelerator is in the mini board bag and I'm too lazy to take a fresh shot, but from when it first arrived:

On that same board is an astoundingly powerful Subdecay Super Spring Theory reverb, but I actually got that pedal for a specific band project that went on hold with the pandemic.

Thus, I think it might jump off and get replaced by an Octopus for the pedalboard's more general-purpose duties, which include some pretty intense, vibey jam sessions.

Also I'm getting tired of moving the PA back and forth between this and my REALLY weird pedalboard (what can I say, I NEED that thing), so a Slampegg Bee Pre might be getting on order for when I'm doing more traditional bass stuff. Heh

Better order before the November slots sell out.

i had a particle accelerator but it had a few issues with weird/ugly distortion at higher gain settings so i sent it back for Nathan to diagnose it. he made a few changes to the circuit and it came back with the eq not working properly (basically not at all) and still had the unusable dirt, so i sent it back for a refund. this is NOT any type of dis on Nathan or the pedal because he responds quickly, is very friendly and a pleasure to deal with. i think that just got a faulty one. i ordered the AD200 (London Underground) earlier this month and i can't wait to test it out. he said that it's very similar to the PA but has the eq in a different location of the circuit so it should remedy the PA's issues that i had.

Actually, this is the first time i heard of this pedal fx brand. The model names are interesting, but they don't tell You what it does at real. I am shure i will buy one of those in near future, but right now, i don't need any.

The website has info about what the pedal was designed after, as well as Soundcloud clips of multiple pedal settings. Agreed, it's not straight out "this is distortion", but the SoundCloud clips are awesome. If I'm not mistaken, they're basically all preamps.

So due to the overwhelming response to the 125B + top jacks option I'm considering redesigning all my boards. As-is I can make them work with top jacks in the larger enclosure, but it's still a bit awkward because I 100% designed them for side jacks. I'm going to give it a bit more time and do the math, figure out how many people are going for the top jacks option, but if it's 90% or so then I may decide to take December off and redesign all the boards and make top jacks the standard option.

After spending more time on the website, I have to stand up and applaud. Having the same riff, on bass, by someone who can play bass, playing through each of the different pedals, and including a bypassed sample is an enormously effective sales tool. I was able to listen to the different pedals that had samples and hear the unique sound characteristics of each and it totally helped my decision making. I know pretty much exactly what tones are available and which pedal I need to get the tones I want. And FWIW, I prefer a top mounted power connector with side mounted instrument jacks. Is that an option?

I feel like "someone that can play bass" is a bit generous, but thanks :) For consistency I recorded the riff into a looper and played it back through each of the pedals. Also I forgot to mention this on the website but all the pedals are going through a Torpedo C.A.B. M+ and direct into my interface so I don't have to worry about microphones and amps.

As for the top mounted power connector and side mounted instrument jacks, that is currently the standard. That's what I have always considered the "traditional" way of doing things so that's how I had designed everything.

FYI, I'm considering a purchase or two (PA & SBP) and would prefer and would be happy to wait for from-the-ground-up-designed top jack boxes. Thanks and good luck!

I'll keep that in mind when I'm doing my math, thanks :)

@Sushi Box FX your store has 2 options for top-jacks. Not sure if theres a good reason, or that was just fallout from the international-shipping issue.

Might be worth deleting whichever isnt needed so it doesnt lead to confusion/more questions.

Yup, that was from the international shipping issue. I'll go ahead and delete the one that thinks it's a physical product.
