UPDATE - What Does this Damage Look Like to You? (Nitro Fender American Vintage II 1960 P-Bass)

Does look like impact damage. It would be a shame if he isn't owning the mistake, but at least he's going to repair it. Beyond that, Fender basses look better the more beat up they get. They may of course be subjective, however, on a vintage style instrument it's just part of the aesthetic and people pay extra for this kind of treatment. Fenders look better with age and wear. And this chip looks cool. Very hard to avoid without ruining your life worrying about it. Anyway - enjoy that beautiful bass!
Thank you @PBassAcidJazz — means a lot and to some extent (trying to separate myself from the damage) I know you’re right :) thanks for keeping it on the positive, hopefully the repair looks good and with that nitro finish in black I know it would take some punishment sooner or later. But yeah, does look like some kind of impact — if you zoom in really close on the first pic, it almost looks burned at the center of the hole, or it’s just discolored… who knows without being there… but for it to come off like a straight chip and a pointy ding in the middle it just seems strange.

Will enjoy it regardless my friend, that’s the right spirit for sure :bassist: thank you!

My question is, so why did we go in for a pickup swap in the first place? 🤔

😊
Hehe you’re right my friend, one of those things I’m kicking myself for later for sure :) I have another P with 60’s era pickups in it and I wanted to run the new Aguilar Ceramics in this one. Was super stoked to hear them in person, but yeah I will probably stick to stock moving fwd or find the time to do it myself in the future :)

I think if the tech didn't do it, then he wouldn't have sent you a picture of it. Also, I wonder if he/she is reading this post? ;)

Glad you're handling it well anyway, and thanks for sharing your experience. Rock on!
Yeah it made me wonder too man for sure, but when I mentioned we went over the bass in depth prior to leaving and me even taking the pickup box out of the neck area of the case where he placed it, “because I don’t want any dings on the neck of a brand new instrument,” he claimed that it looks like something Fender maybe did and tried to cover up prior to sale.

It looked brand spanking new at drop off, plastic still on the guard, no polish scratches (I buy a brand new plush Fender cloth for each new instrument), so yeah the whole thing threw me off for sure.

Thanks for the kind words and really appreciate the feedback and encouragement too :)

I mean I heard the stock pickup that came in these were great, just sayin’ 🤣

I'm trying to sell off some junk around here to get one before they go up in price again.

Sorry to hear of this.
Something similar happened to me....I bought a new bass bag and the straps broke smashing my bass in the street....Dented chips all along the bottom.
Manager asked what I wanted ...I got a new bag and I painted the chips with black nail polish...did not show
Well...it was first damage on a perfect bass.
Stuff like this always happens in life

We cannot hang on too tight to posessions....something happens to teach us a lesson.
Glad the tech is repairing it.
It will look good.
You have the first story to tell in the life of your bass.
I have learned that nobody takes care of your things as well as your self

I dig the pickups for sure man, really dug the demos on the Aggy’s too. There were some similarities too, was an old fan of ceramics, just something different in this one brotha, let me know if you get a set of the AmVintage II’s. They do sound tasty no argument there fasho.

Thank you @murphy — damn man I’m so sorry to hear about your bass — that stings!!!! I always have a tough time trusting bags and cases with too much hardware inside even…

You’re 100% spot-on my friend, both with this being the first story to tell (with a happy ending I hope lol), and that no one really cares about your stuff like you do. Something I definitely have lived by, and giving my stuff to techs has been the only deviation from this philosophy, which always made me nervous…

But you are right about hanging on too tight to material possessions, I definitely have a problem with that… lesson is sinking in 🙏 thanks again for the kind words my friend.

Actually, it looks a lot like a sharp soldering iron was dropped on it. In fact, maybe that's solder in the center of the hole? Looking forward to seeing the repair photo, and perhaps a full confession from the accused. ;)
Hehe yeah I don’t think we will get the confession if it was him but for sure my friend, looking forward to seeing it fixed — keeping my fingers crossed. If I was to guess, I’d say you’re right about what it looks like — that was the first thing I thought but didn’t say anything or accuse him. Who knows… will keep you posted once it cures and I get it back :) thank you!

Yes, maybe the hot pointy tip of a soldering iron fell straight down on the body. It looks like solder mixed with black paint in the hole.
Yeah I was thinking along the same lines, I was wondering about the coloring in the hole myself and figured something along these lines. One of those things I’ll never know since I wasn’t there, but really appreciate the forum chiming-in on what they believe it is, just makes me feel like I’m not going crazy. Thanks for checking it out!

I wouldn’t want to speculate on the cause or the culprit, but if you went over the bass together when you handed it in, I have great difficulty in believing neither of you spotted it, especially given the nature of the damage, and that it’s in such a visible place. If it had been spotted, the tech would surely have pointed it out to avoid any suspicion that it was caused by him.

To my mind, this indicates that the damage happened after you had handed the bass in. A good way to avoid situations like this is to snap a few close-ups of the bass just before it goes in. That way, you have a dated photographic reference for the state of the instrument.
