WARNING: Darrin Huff Basses / Zeller Guitars

I'm fascinated to know why a customer would change their order from an in-progress scroll to the MW model. If that scroll order is not already in progress, then why is it suddenly available to the public?

Fact is, Darrin has sold a number of scroll basses outside of the waiting list -- three that I know of, possibly more. Reasons given:
  • Customer canceled order and was given refund (LOL at the refund)
  • "Personal bass" that no one knew existed
  • "Demo bass"
Now he's back open for business to the general public, and I don't see any more assurances for those of us still waiting, so I think it's obvious how our orders will be prioritized.

I have paid in full and would love to get my Huff bass while I'm still able to play it, but given everything I noted just above, I think it's far more important to warn everyone.

i paid a small deposit last year to get a "spare" bubinga scroll bass built [hoping to kick start his progress with the clients scroll bass list ]
after the clients scroll basses had been fullfilled not before. that would be an incredibly low act. not what i am about. so i switched the bubinga scroll that was partly pre built slab form Darrin had on offer to the MW bass which is not built .just a preference . have you lads thought of " intervention ?" you get Darrin's real friends and family to rally around him and try to remove this strong blockage? but i think you already have. Darrins's no socieopath he is a fairly nice bloke but i cannot pretend to know what is going on here.sorry clients cannot imagine the grief.

Interesting.. very interesting.

whats the problem? i have read the thread now and then .

no no i am saying i cannot imagine the grief the very very very patient clients have felt and endured over the last 2 decades .

So, you know that there are many people waiting over 15 years for a bass they have paid for in full? And you should also know about the many people who got ripped off by Darrin with his yo-yo scam. But you still thought it wise to give him a deposit for an instrument that hasn't yet been made? You sir, are the definition of optimism.... or stupidity..... or both.

So, the bubinga scroll is yet another "spare" he's pulled out of his.... hat. It's pretty amazing how much work Darrin has gotten done on instruments that don't go to wait-listers. Sincere thanks for the clarification.

I also appreciate the sympathy, but I think you're now a member of the club. Doesn't matter to us whether you put your money down last year or 20 years ago. Welcome aboard. :)

very small deposit mate . 5%. OK i still beleive the clients orders will be fullfilled .yeah OK still wary granted .the problem how i see it anyway is Darrin builds the bass guitar version of a stradavarious voilin. too much extreme perfectionism in his mind . off the chart perfectionism . he cannot step away from it somehow and build 9/10 great quality scroll basses and crank em out to the very patient clients. that is the intervention i proposed. who knows how to fix this i don't . anyway i am no psychologist .

You've stumbled into a quagmire.

How did you discover D.Huff? Facebook? Insta? You'd never heard of this thread? You surely must have known some history of the scroll bass debacle? The very trees know it!

Did you get a completion date for your MW bass?

no completion date for the proposed bubinga scroll or the MW choice .i did not ask never talked about. it was always after the clients were fullfilled though .but i figured a small deposit i can possibly own a Dhuff down the track.how far down the track not sure. cannot remember a while ago now.maybe i was researching scroll basses like a CT and it popped up. then i saw the luthier skills Darrin has . second to none.i was just sorting out a question on the MW bass. i wanted folks to know i was never jumping the queue.

Sorry to say but I think you are adding to the problem. He has issues finishing the basses due, and now another one has been added to that list. It's one more hurdle for him to overcome, even if he does not realize it.

i think i am done with talkbass .i will remove myself from the discussion.
Kinda makes me wonder what the point was in you coming here in the first place. A friend or sympathizer arguing that Darren's not so bad, and making that argument to a group of people he scammed?

not even close .have you not read what i have posted. .i answered a question needed to be addressed on the MW bass and also to say i am not jumping the queue ever. that was it ?!?! i had some insights to say Darrin suffers perfectionism and that may be the cause for the client list going unfullfilled. "constructive " mate. i want the clients to get their scroll basses that is my deal 100% . i made some points and got attacked. no argument to say "Darrins not so bad " was made to the people left out in the cold . i actually showed empathy to the clients predicament. which still stands despite.
