Unreal. Wow, interesting to hear all these stories! I actually bought that '83 Cutlass from Darrin all those years ago...

That was my #1 bass for many years, until I switched to 5-string. As I may have noted, that went to Darrin to pay my order in full up front  ... I still have no idea if/when I'm getting a bass or a refund. Anyway, I hope you like the Cutlass too.

FWIW, this is one of the in-progress pics posted by Darrin on 10/9.

I actually sold the Cutlass after I had it about a year. It just wasn't quite what I was looking for. Incidentally, I set it up BEAD :D

Charles, that white bass was the one. It was to be an all white stingray ala Larry Graham's Moon bass. I will probably send it to Michael Dolan for a proper refin sometime in the next year. I'll try to round up some pics if I can find them.

Dude....
HANDS DOWN,one of the SICKEST hunks 'o' wood that I've EVER seen!!
Worth the wait.Even if it were just for the wood!!

I wish I could agree with you, but there is nothing that is worth this wait. The problem isn't just the wait, it's interacting with somebody who repeatedly falls short of his word. I just can't believe anything he says, because the last 20 promises didn't come true. I have asked for my money back over 14 months ago. He hasn't returned a single dime.

If you look at the finished basses: Darrin shipped one in February and another in September. By anybody's standards, that's progress at a snail's pace. So on top of the wait which has frustrated all of his customers, there seems to be little end in sight. He has and continues to let a lot of people down.

The best quote so far is a few posts above, "so close, yet so far..."

So no basses have shipped since Tommy's bass.

So far, Darrin has only completed 2 basses this year and 1 bass last year. And of those 3 instruments, one was a bolt on J bass and another was a bolt on P bass.

I will update this thread at the end of December for a year-end summary. He claims to be nearly done on 3 custom instruments, and while we've heard that for a while, let's see if he can finally be a man of his word.

OK, I thinks it's appropriate to have a year end summary for completed basses by Darrin Huff:

2006 - 0 finished basses
2007 - 0 finished basses
2008 - 1 finished bass (bolt on P-bass)
2009 - 2 finished basses (bolt on J-bass, 6 string custom bass)
2010 - ?... but 3 basses near completion...

I am not certain about the years prior to 2006 because Darrin's website has had several purges over the years, and I don't want to publish misinformation. He did have some productive years in 02-04 when he made some of the beautiful basses that are pictured on his website. Those of us that are waiting on instruments just hope he can get back to wherever he was back then. Regardless of what happens at this point, he has irrevocable damaged his reputation by his recent actions, including (but not limited to): failed deadlines, empty promises and lack of output.

This is my personal tribute to Darin. Once I seen his designs I had to build my own. It takes a lot of hard work, time and creativity to produce something a little different than the average. Put a little spin of my own on the headstock, fretboard end and control knob area. Burl Walnut looks like leather. Love it.

Thanks Darin for inspiring me.

Damn dudes. Unbelievable. NO BASS is worth such BS. NONE. Sorry.
You can get them about anywhere, quickly, and they probably sound way better than D's eye candy. And NO I've never played one. I think after this thread, I would not like this guy just out of principle.

That's awesome, man! I think he would like to see this.
