Wow, at least you got something. After 7 years I ain't got squadoosh. A few years ago I spent half a year yelling at Darrin for a refund, but all I got for my effort was a myriad of excuses and promises that my bass would be done next month.

I ordered the bass for my 44th birthday, and am now an old man of 51. Haven't heard from Darrin in years. I have no idea where I stand in the build queue. I paid Darrin $2500 up front, and am resigned to the fact that I will never see a refund or a bass.

I've been trying to hold my tongue, thinking that maybe he'd get his **** together, but his behavior makes Dr. Bass look like a responsible builder. I've never been raped so badly on the internet. My deepest apologies to you up-and-coming luthiers, but I'm only giving my money to well-established businesses.

I made a comment to Darrin on another forum about being a hack who would take their money and stick it to them.Several people ran to Darrins rescue saying"He's a great builder and great guy".I hate that I was right.

a weapon!!

yes, i'm not the original buyer

it's the best confortable bass i have
more than my fodera imperial in 34" who hurt my left wrist.
the neck of the huff is so easy to play!
every guitar or bass player who try that bass have a greats feels on it.

sorry for the people who have trouble with darrin's organisation, but and the end, the basses are master pieces.

i had the choice to make one or to seek one for mouths, and i'd finally take the second option.
no regrets at all.

I know Darrin's work well.

All business aspects aside; his work is absolutely top-notch.

Which makes it especially frustrating for many of us on the 7+ year wait list. I've said my piece about all that, no need for me to go there again.

It certainly does look like Darrin's making better progress, and I hope his rate of production continues to improve.

What's more frustrating?

Any of us waiting 7+ years probably could have taken up luthiery and gained the skills to make such a bass in that amount of time.

:bag:
Well, maybe, anyway...

Hopefully I will get to see his work some day, if he ever finishes my bass. I think he has an unfortunate combination of a poor work ethic, obsession with perfection, and a creative mind for excuses that together drive his customers crazy.

We all want the basses to be perfect, but he obsesses with every little detail, rather than streamlining the process by standardizing some aspects of the build. He then makes promises that the basses will be done by some deadline (I had promises of just weeks to completion years ago, like most customers), and when he misses deadlines the excuses come pouring in.

I wish I had found information to push me away from sending him money in the first place. We are all just hoping that he eventually builds basses. He's already stated that he will stop taking custom orders, but if he relies on his own work ethic to eventually market made to spec basses, he'll be in trouble.

It's past the 5th any news?

I have to say that Darrin's are amongst the most incredible looking basses I have laid eyes on, but not worth a 7+ year wait.

I hope all those on the "list" end up with an incredible instrument, and hope he get's his act together quikly, as unlikely as that sounds.

Indeed, and I hope he really manages to use recent lessons to crank up the pace a little. He makes some really amazing basses - probably nicer than the current ones coming out of the CT shop and his attention to detail is astonishing. But the long wait is really all mental since even his slow and careful approach shouldn't be taking this long (ca. 2-3 basses a year, and that may be generous).
