WARNING: Darrin Huff Basses / Zeller Guitars

FWIW my bass is the "other rainbow bass" in this batch of 3. I talked to Darrin via text a few days ago and he was shooting for an update of "finished basses." He also told me he had an idea that would reward those of us who had to wait forever, but I don't really want to say as I feel it'd be better for him to announce it. Anywho, just letting you guys know what I know!

He made promises to me & I WOULD REALLY JUST LIKE MY BASS - going on 4 years waiting.

To prosecute him would bring nothing as he owns little, and would just drain negative time & energy, really just to punish him is about all we would get out of it.

There's another update on his site....saying that the finish on the three that are "almost" done is having some problems and he needs a day or two to decide what to do with the finish on 'em (I'm guessing that he needs to decide between pressing on with this finish he dislikes and take awhile to apply or using another one.....which would be another delay...).

No basses shipped yet.

And yesterday (Friday Oct 8th) Darrin said that the current batch of three basses should be done on Wednesday Oct 13th.

Well, it's Wednesday now, and on Darrin's site he stated that he's buffing the finish and putting in the pups/electronics and wasn't going to post photos until they're "done" on "Friday." I only have those in quotes because I'm sure that they'll change....just as it has every other week for years for many of us.

On a side note, one of the people who are in the next group of basses being built threatened that he would be taking legal action against Darrin (the customer said that he'd paid in full and has been waiting 7+ years and he's only gotten a single photo from Darrin. Darrrin replied by saying that he has no money and legal action would likely reap little-to-no benefit; he also asked the guy to be patient for a few more months, because his bass should be done by then. Again, this is just my synopsis of the going's on over at Darrin's site.

My rainbow bass with a 3D scroll is one of the three being "worked on" right now. Over the last 4 months, every single week I've been told "It'll be done around the end of the week!!!" And of course, the date goes by, uneventful. Then Darrin will text me with some sort of excuse and give me another "tentative date."

It's such a shame because the man does amazing work (his waiting list is proof of that -- many, many people who have paid in full would most likely agree) it's just that his work ethic is very questionable. And when confronted about it he gets very upset and falls into an abyss of self pity. I just try to give him some moral support at this point so that he can do his job....but goodness....it's been so long, I'm likely to have a heart attack once it ACTUALLY shows up.

I've resigned myself to the fact that bitching and threatening will only make things worse. I hope you get your bass soon, because that will give me hope that I might get mine within a decade of ordering it (7.5 years ago this month). :meh:

It is Wednesday, but it's one week after Darrin said three basses would be done. It's both sad and pathetic when you consider how many times Darrin knowingly lies to his customers.

I counted 28 names of basses that have been paid for by customers when going through Darrin's website. Most have paid him between 2 and 2.5K for an instrument, which is money he claims to no longer have. Now he pretends that he'll complete all the basses by the end of 2010. If you do the math, it means he will need to finish a bass every 2.5 days to stay on track, and keep in mind he hasn't finished one bass in over 12 months.

just read through this thread. jebus. i guess there's not much you can do at this point. but...... more than 7 years for a bass? woof.

you guys are troopers.

This thread should be called "Darrin Huff Support Group".

On the bright side, there's relativity: now that I'm inside the Darrin Huff black hole, the 8 month wait for my Sadowsky seemed like it only took 8 weeks. :p

lol. glad he helped you in SOME way. i missed a couple pages on my first read-through. just went back and read everything, and it's almost like listening to a Battered Wives Support Meeting. i feel just awful for all of you.

i have a Dingwall AB-I 6 i ordered like 3 months ago that they got done about a month and a half early, found a dead spot on the neck, the OWNER of the company called me, we had a lengthy discussion about options and he thinks it will be ready to ship out late next week. the AB-I's aren't completely custom, but they are built when you order them. this is the way a transaction with a luthier should go.

i'm not at ALL trying to rub it in, i feel sick to my stomach when i read about you guys feeling you won't be able to use the bass you waited so long for if it ever DOES get completed. that's just horrible. but there ARE some amazing luthier's that are amazing people out there. not just scam artists that do great demo's of work that he never completes for you. 'cause...... no matter how "nice" of a guy he is, he's pretty much a scumbag for taking money, completely screwing 90% of you, and giving a bad name to the people that work their asses off to take care of their customers.

Let me know if you want it changed or if you want to add a little warning for potential future customers.
