What are your favorite basses that you got for $700 or less?

My last acquisition, an '84 Aria pro II elite I BnG for 600$ CAD.

Best deal I've ever made, it plays like a dream, sounds like a monster, looks like a midnight queen!!

For me, those would be my Schecter Stiletto Studio-5, Ovation Ultra Bass, and Certain Elita Jazz.

Found the Stiletto on craigslist for $400, goes for $820 new. It has a ridiculous build quality to price ratio even if bought new, but it comes equipped with EMG HZ pickups which are probably the worst pickups I've ever heard. Once I replace the pickups with Seymour Duncan NYC's and the preamp with the STC-3P, the total cost will be close to buying it new, but it will be so much better than stock.

Got the Ovation Ultra Bass off Guitar Center through the online used section. At only $300 it was a super steal, and the previous owner even had it routed into a PJ. Gonna replace the pickups with an EMG PJAX set.

And last is the Elita Jazz, made by the infamous David Certain. This bass usually goes for around $1100, but I found a used one in Ohio while on a travel gig for $600. I don't know what it is, but this bass just feels right and sounds great.

So what about you guys? Be sure to post pics!

Both my basses were less than $700.

First was a parts bass, a GF j body, MM j neck, misc hardware, Fender WBW PG, and Bartolini 18v preamp and pickups (those together were about $200, plus $75 for a luthier to install them- did a great job used the backside of the body as a cover for the double battery box, even I have trouble seeing it and I know its there). Total or that one was about $500.

Pre-Barts.

My 1967 Epiphone Rivoli bought from a friend for $150, and after about a year the neck block needed to be replaced. Its a bolt on Japanese, which unconfirmed internet sources say didn't happen until a few years later. So either Epiphone's serial number database is wrong or the unconfirmed internet sources are. Anyway, Dan Erliwine replaced the neck block which a previous owner (before the guy I bought it from) had cut out and replaced with a piece of what he thought was oak. Did a poor job of it, and Dan had to use "$20 worth of epoxy" to glue in a proper piece of pine (or whatever). Labor on that totalled $150, so that bass cost me $300 total.

Both my current basses were about a hundred more than the OP's question.

The Epiphone is definitely not a 1967, the internet sources are correct. That would be a 1970 at the oldest.

I just looked over my profile listing of basses and was surprised that, out of the couple of dozen basses I've owned, I only paid over $700 for 5 of them; a Shen upright, a 64 P, 64 J, and 2 -65 J's.

The trio below is my best week ever of $700 basses. I paid $1400 for the 1996 American Deluxe Active Jazz and the Martin B40 together, then a couple days later, the 1970 factory fretless P for $700.

one of my Warmoths , a couple mij 80's Fenders , a few Ibby's ...

there is a lot in that price range plus/minus $50 ... and a wide variety ... Jazz , P , MM styles

figure out what sound you want ... start shopping .. ! there is some pretty good quality stuff out there .!

All but two of my basses cost less than $700. I'll just mention the cheapest one (that may turn out to be my favorite.)

Just recently got a HH fiver from Rondo. Hadean Vickers TR GR neck-thru maple/walnut/ash. Usually $200, I got it on sale for $150.
It sounds incredible. Nearly cops that stingray sound with the two channel pre. It came set up beautifully with good strings.
This one weights 9lb 1oz. I think they're still on sale. (wink wink)

  • Danelectro 90's reissue SB Longhorn with D'Addario, SS, FW.
  • Dano 63 red with Rotosound Swinger 66s, SS, RW.
  • Epi Pro IV Classic T-Bird burst with D'Addario, Nickel, RW.
  • Epi JC white with D'Addario, Nickel, HW.

That's a steal... $USD or $EUR?
US$500, but adding shipping and customs, makes a final €600 (euro was much stronger at the time).
Still a good deal, given its excellent condition - I had to buy a new pickguard though, and also changed the Schaller tuning keys to original ultra-lite G&L.
It had been on ebay for less than 10 minutes when I pressed the Buy It Now button.

The Squire modified jazz bass V was my first under 700.00 bass.
Next was the Ray35ca from Sterling by Music man. I have the
MM Classic series Stingray 5 bass and I liked the pickup and
electronics in the Ray35ca so well, that I had them switched
and my classic series sounds as close to the pre-ernie ball
stingrays as you can get with the added B string!!!!!

My favorite bass under $700 is also the one I no longer own. :rollno:

2006 Fender MIM Precision Bass. The moment I saw it in the store, I instantly fell in love with the color - Midnight Wine, which sadly is no longer offered for the Standard MIM. My son played it for the high school jazz band for three years with a set of D'A Chromes on it and it sounded great. I wish I could have it back!
