My Cabbies, an American Special, and an Aerodyne Precision all come in under the limit.
Love these posts. There's a not so fine line on our forums that exhibit a true divide between high/low end basses. And $700 seems like a very real ceiling for a lot of guys/gals. It comes down to art (playing music being a true art form; the good, bad and ugly) and commerce using the player as a fulcrum. Do $1000+ basses sound and play better? I'll go 90% of them. But there's something to be said about a beater that grossly outperforms all realistic expectations. Of all the variables and unknowns that go into a real "player"; wood, temperature, build team, day of the week it was made. Finding a gem is hitting the lottery. Through sheer numbers alone, there has to have been a couple of Squiers that could hold their own with a Pre-CBS. While many people believe making more of anything dilutes the potential of an instrument. Being an optimist, I think it allows for more "magic" basses.
I've been GASing for one of those lately. An MIJ would be awesome.Ibanez ATK305, made in Korea, guestimated late 90's. $200 @ Guitar Center, in my favorite color too. Sounds and plays great. Has a FAT round neck that is so difficult to find these days.
