Whatcha watching?

It was my first time. Took me about 2 years.

Nice. I didn't start watching it until about a week before season eight started. Then I scrambled to catch up to real time. I did it, I got caught up a week and half before the final episode.

I forgot how much I like NYPD Blue.
It's all coming back to me as I watch each episode like I watched it for the first time yesterday.

I don't tend to watch fiction anymore, it cannot possibly compete with our reality. You really couldn't make it up...

Agreed. Most of what happens in recent reality would be dismissed as too implausible or extreme in fiction. I pity the writers for "House of Cards" as they simply couldn't keep up - and it was clearly meant to be exaggerated in the first place.

That's why I generally only like speculative fiction. Sci fi, fantasy, anything where the world isn't this world or there's something weird going on. I have very little interest in fiction about regular people doing regular things.

I love a lot of the counter-factual premises as with "The Man in the High Castle" , etc (I also worked on the Netflix series "1983" which was set in an alternative history where the Soviet Union never fell - the lead director being an alumna of The Wire and House of Cards) and mentioned "The Plot Against America" (from the Philip Roth book) and just finished it. Really good (and great ending!) IMO.

I started watching season 1 of Jack Ryan on Amazon. I've watched it before but i didn’t have time for a movie today so i watched an hour of Ryan. I may continue on but i won’t know until i next sit down to watch something.

I enjoyed NYPD Blue for a while. Jimmy Smits was good in it (but I think he did something in his personal life that changed his career path). Dennis Franz is definitely the MVP in that show. They lost me by the time they brought in little Ricky Schroeder.

The one thing I found odd throughout is the dialogue. The writers really tried to shoehorn in some highbrow language. I found it a bit distracting, not because I didn’t understand, but because it didn’t feel natural.

For snicks, the wife and I have watched Bonanza episodes.
I used to watch it with my Granny in the '60s religiously.
It's not terrible but, I'm finding that all those old drama shows don't cut the mustard these days for me. Don't find the acting very good...or maybe it is the directing. Stories are lame.
Some of the sitcoms aren't too bad.
Everybody Loves Raymond is a favorite. I laugh at loud to that.

Twilight Zone still holds up IMO (and I like Black Mirror as a sort of contemporary version - though the first episode scares many people off).

The first episode of Black Mirror I ever saw was the one with Fat Damon and Callister and I thought that was the first episode of the show. So I thought the whole thing was gonna be about that crew of simulated people on the ship exploring the simulated universe. Then I realized my mistake and watched episode one about the pig. I was very disappointed. The show only has a few good episodes, IMO. Nosedive is amazing.

The pig episode is too extreme. I do disagree on the overall quality of the series though. Quite a few very good episodes IMO. Different strokes.

It's interesting how divisive the "pig" episode is. It's definitely not the best episode of the show, but I've known people who started there and were repelled enough to stop watching entirely. But I agree about the series in general. Some amazing, some OK, and some aren't good at all.

I could understand how a show about the prime minister of England being forced to have sex with a pig on camera could disuade people from wanting to watch other episodes. But it didn't bother me. I'm not sensitive like that. It just wasn't compelling television. It was sensational for the sake of being sensational. It was "oooh look how edgy we are." Whereas other episodes are interesting science fiction, the first episode was all wow factor.

Agreed. Speaking of sensational, I watched the pilot of "Euphoria" on HBO a couple nights ago. Wow. I'm not easily offended at all, but it was way too dark for me. It reminded me of an updated version of the movie "Kids." I doubt I'll watch more of it.

That's about the same as I feel about the show. I'm sitting here watching the Caruso episodes and realizing in the not too distant future I get to see Ricky from Silver Spoons, then Zack from Saved By The Bell. Eh, maybe I'll just keep rewatching seasons one and two.
Sipowicz though, yeah he made the show. Although I always liked Fancy and Medavoy.

Eraser. I LOVE that line when the mob guys come to the gate and say:

"We heard you was loading a ship widdout the assistance of bonafide union labor. Say it ain't so."

Eraser isn't great classic cinema, but it's a good "blow 'em up."

Earlier today I caught a 1945 B&W Jack Benny comedy movie titled "The Horn Blows at Midnight." Quite an amusing comedy - he plays an angel named Nathaniel who is supposed to go to Earth and blow it up, because "The Boss" has decided that Earth isn't working out very well and he wants to start over. All Nathaniel needs to do is blow four notes on a trumpet at precisely midnight to make it happen. Not a normal opening for a comedy.

He learns that other angels have gone down to do this, but no one ever heard from them. Turns out that when he gets to Earth (via an elevator that conveniently unloads in the lobby of a swanky hotel) they're having a great time on Earth and partying all the time.

A happy resolution is reached that allows Nathaniel and others to stay on Earth and continue their parties.
