What's On Your Workbench?

Got started on this.

Dyed the top with transtint…. Mahogany brown, and amber. Going for a “antique tigers eye” type finish. Didn’t want it too yellow, but still wanted some of that “glow”.

Anyway….

Before….

And currently, with first clear coat on it….

Just a random general question for my favorite group of useful individuals

How would you remove/neutralize WD-40 to re-oil or grease something you cleaned with it?

Like if you opened a bearing and used WD-40 to remove heavy, grease and replace it with something a little faster, that kind of thing. Would you just dab up the excess and then grease it? Would you want to let it air out or something?

I work for a bearing manufacturer and most of my customers use some brake cleaner to get rid of grease and contaminants with good results as it doesn’t leave any residue.

Would obviously be to harsh for finished parts, soft plastics and wood though.

Some workshops use lacquer thinner in a tub (a so called Varsol tub) with similar results but this product is harsher than brake cleaner.

And mixing two different greases or any lubricant together is not suitable, especially if one of the two is synthetic based so you better remove as much old grease and WD40 as possible.

Hi folks 👋
Some more crap on my bench at the CS.
I've decided I wanted to do all the binding that comes through. (Something I've shied away from.)
Time I bucked up like a good lil buttercup.

So I told Rob... "hey I want all the binding."
Wasn't hard to talk him out of it.

So here's my first attempt at plastic binding on a body. I picked an easy mk1 to practice on.
Learned some stuff... finna learn more.
.... I'm not mad at it.

Okay, I see that I have not been here since January. Well, many things have happened:
- Daughter graduated high school and started college - YAY
- Lost employment due to "Corporate Restructuring" - BOO

So, currently looking for employment, but since the honey-do list is dwindling and I do not have to go to school events like before, I have time to work on this albatross.

Finished Cutting Slots.jpg

Finally took the plunge and cut fret slots. Never did that before. And yes, I decided to be a masochist and go multiscale.
I need to sand the fret board a little due to "yips" with the fret saw. I guess I did not score the slots deep enough with the scalpel.

Cavity Routed.jpg

Routed out the control cavity in the lower wing. I get very nervous working with this Hemlock - it tends to shatter if you force it.

Lita Ford came by the shop again. 🥱
She's a sweetheart... sure.
But more importantly... she brought toys!
They all ganged up on my bench so I could take her favorite neck profile dimensions.
(We're building her another)

So... um holy crap!!!
Holy Rock and Roll history Batman!!
...on my bench.
We have... "Red"... aka "FTW"🖕💀

Moríce's neck is her favorite profile, that's what we're going with.

But then... OH.MY.GOD
Anybody remember the Hamer?
I believe she has two. (White & black)... but this one the OG...

Just finished working with a G&L or just the body and bridge. I made a fretless thermo treated neck with ebony fretboard with epoxy cast DASR truss rod and cf back strap and brass blocks for neck machine screws. The bridge mounts to an aluminium block with machine screws.

Well, it’s been forever but the bandsaw restoration project has yielded a bandsaw.
IMG_7658.jpeg

It makes wiggly cuts:
IMG_7657.jpeg

It makes straight, slicey cuts:
IMG_7656.jpeg

In other words, it does bandsaw stuff.

The project got delayed multiple times for multiple reasons but it has now finally transitioned from being a project to being a tool with which I can complete other projects. There are still a few finishing touches that need to happen but they don’t need to happen right away.

The 1937 Walker-Turner lives! On to the next machine!

Looks great Ethan! I especially like that table. It adds class to a fine old machine.

Mine is still sitting here, waiting for me to hang a motor on it. Unfortunately, about a dozen other machines are in line ahead of it, waiting for some of my time......
