Hi guys,
First off, this is pretty much for guys who have built more than 1 or 2 instruments. I think the title says it all. What is your day job? Do other woodwork apart from bass building? kids? Without feeding your ego with a shovel, Id like to know your background since behind every bass is a builder. Show a pic of yourself if you want. The point is to, maybe, possibly, try and make this place a bit more 'human'.

Thanks for replying guys, I appreciate it. Ive always prefered TBers calling me by name instead of my username... come to think about it I should have used my name as my username.. :meh: I dont want TB to be like facebook, we can just go to facebook if we want the chitter chatter stuff. Hi. My name is Mike.

About to turn the big 3 0 :(

I am an organic chemist by day and have been building instruments for 15 years. I started working with wood in the sixth grade and I have been hooked ever since. I currently have over 120 types of trees in my house from all parts of the world with the exception of the Antarctic. My carpentry skills quickly grew into mechanical skills and I am now an outpatient of the Henry Ford Clinic.

No wife, no kids-that I am aware ;)

Built my first bass sophomore year. Junior year my brother had a physics project for a "stringed instrument." He went into that class with a fully functioning guitar and was the toast of the high school for the remainder of his years. :bassist:

software deployment program manager who specializes in CAD/CAM/CAE for advanced composites in aerospace. prior to being on the software side I was on the user side for both engineering and manufacturing. I get to visit some pretty ... um ... off the beaten path places sometimes :ninja:

my building time is limited to evenings and weekends at the moment, and I'm in process of 'fitting into' a new shop

Kids: two daughters, aged 12 and 13

Wife, married for 15 years next month.

Dog: long-haired Chihuahua whose christened name is "Nelson" but whom I have called, "My-little-rodent-friend" since the day he came home. (sorry Rodent!)

Favorite music: Dave Matthews Band (license plate: DMBJAMS . . . sad isn't it?)

Favorite Car: My 1981 Mercedes Benz 300SD bearing the above plate.

Metal Trades Supervisor, Nuclear Industry: 30 years exp.

Musical performance: since 1979; bass since 1999 Usually get out 3 or 4 performances/ month

Woodworking since age 14; mostly furniture until this past year.

Hobby: Avid road cyclist (like Lance) logging 5k to 6k miles in 8 months per year

Second job: building basses; intent is to take the next 10 years till I retire to develop a viable supplemental vocation. Please send me a bandsaw . . .

Cool ! Right on guys. Rod that seems like quite the job.. So you have no problem drawing up plans of your next build, right? haha. Dave Matthews, Cleveland? Sweeeeeet !!!! I also got quite the lack of patience, many walls have seen pieces of wood thrown at them, and many pieces of wood have been thrown to the walls. I envy you for your marriage and daughters. I can't wait to have kids.

Hello my name is Mario and Im an alcoholic. Im 25, 'engaged' to m y lovely girl that Ive known for the past 10 years, and have been working wood for, also, 10 years. I now run a 19 by 42' shop, building doors and windows, furniture and basses.

Here is a small example of what I do.
I custom built the Staircase, Door, and even installed the floor in this house. My brother took care of the Crowns. It was a nice house when we got it done.

age 56: Married 33 years, 3 kids 3 grandkids

built my first acoustic guitar in 1978 as a haven from working with troubled adolescents as a behavioral therapist. did that work for 23 years. The last 9 years of counseling was as a school social worker. i took over as a woodworking teacher in 2000 and have taught about 400 kids how to build electric and acoustic instruments.

played bass in weekend warrior bands my whole life and started focusing on basses in the mid 80's

I don't know how many instruments I've built but it's in the hundreds by now.

still can't wait for the next project!

Day job, 19 yrs as a General Motors technician.
Got my start in building basses in '78. I used to hang out at the Guitar Works, in Santa Cruz CA.
2 of the techs ( Rick McKee and John Tuescher) were regulars with the Doobie Bros and various other pro bands. These guys were great to me. They planted the seed, and it's been growing ever since.
I'm starting a hobby/side business this summer, and plan on building my spin on the venerable P bass and 2 other designs I have. I'm limited on time, space and larger shop tools, but I make due and enjoy every minute of it. I continue to learn by my mistakes;) Btw, I love this forum, it's been a great ride!
I also enjoy catfishin' with my boys and USHL hockey games with the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders.
My recent craze is Latin Jazz, Mongo Santamaria is da man!

COOL !! Keep it comin' guys ! Tom... or Mr.Tom that is (hehe sorry) how is building full time? It must be easier at 50, financially speaking. Its nice to see all of you guys are older, no joke. My best friends are my Dad and Uncle, as well as my buddy's Uncle, who is 56. Nothing like takin a beer with them and talkin for hours. What can I say, I love learning and most guys my age don't so they ain't got much to teach me, so I turn to my older friends to learn. Hard to smoke some 'funny tobacco' with some of you though...

I work as a software engineer for a living (hate the day job).
Mid-humper.
Extremely judgemental and self conscious about my work.
Playing bass for 20 years now.
Been building basses as a hobby 2002, formalized the business part time in 2005.
LOOOOVE photography and spend way too much money on cameras and lenses.
I am not an alcoholic (wait, doesn't that mean that I AM?) but I enjoy tasting out world liquor.
I am NOT tidy, but I know where everything is and if you move something or straighten up I will not find anything, ever.
I like to do "manly" stuff like shaving with a straight razor (and cutting my face), driving a manual transmission, wearing uncomfortable boots and old time rugged hats, NOT doing the dishes and drinking craft beer.
I like horror movies.
Pirates are better than Ninjas.

Hello all. I'm 65, been married for 22 years to my second wife, bunch of kids, G/kids and GG/kids. Live on 17 acres 65 miles SW of the Dallas/Ft Worth metroplex is nice, but limited supplies for my hobbies.

I've been in the furniture finishing/refinishing for around 30 years. Since I retired this year, back into building basses for grins. Been working on some prototypes, fun and makes this old brain keep working. I like to build up/finish parts basses and donate them to kids who are musically inclined, but don't have the resources to afford one.

Hopefully by the end of next week, I'll finally have my shop built. Will have a 24'x24' metal building with a dedicated finishing room. Man, can't wait.......:):):)

Love to play bluegrass, blues, country, gospel, praise and worship.

Great thread Mario!! just what the doctor ordered.

My name is Scott most call me Scotty. I'm 31 years old. My family consists of my son who's 8 and my wife of 9 years who I've been with for well over 13.

We've got 4 dogs, the only one I really care for is a Chihuahua wiener dog mix that I playfully named Sancho. That said, Sancho is my homie! If I'm at home he's right by my side, and when I arrive home he's waiting at the door.

I'm a water treatment operator by day and I build guitars part time on nights and weekends. I've done repairs for a looooong time and I've been building since 03,

The number of builds I’ve done is in the mid 20's 18 of which are Redeemers. I named my basses Redeemer because I feel that any talent I have is not rightfully mine because it was given to me by my Savior Jesus Christ, so I do not find it appropriate to have my own name on them. (Please note that this is not up for debate, these are my personal feelings and if you don’t like them that is fine but please keep it to yourself and I will respectfully do the same for you and your feelings):)

As far as woodworking goes I've also built a little bit of furniture, my last project was a fireplace mantel for our home.

I started playing guitar at around 13 years old, I switched to bass not too long afterwards, I never really got very good at either one..... :meh:

I also like to build stuff from steel (welding cutting ect), I've built several custom cars and hotrods, my latest project is a bobber style motorcycle.

Short term goal; build a new shop.:hyper: Long term goal; stay healthy, happy and keep on building basses.;)

Work has consumed my life the past year. It's not always that way but this year has been good. I'm going to order parts soon so stay tuned.

Hey nice thread!

I am a web programmer, working full time, but I've been a system administrator, network technician, movie cameraman and a 3D graphics designer.

Like a few people around, I will turn 30 in two months, my fiancée and I will have our first kid in mid july. I also have a dog and a bird. Although, the bird belong to my girlfriend, I just can't stand it when it sings early in the morning.

I have been learning wood working and building basses since 2004. I have made 8 basses so far and a ukulele for a friend. I also made two poker tables. I can only work on weekends and evenings in my small shop of 13 x 10. Actually it is supposed to be a bedroom in my basement that I converted.

I also enjoy doing motorcycle trips, I try to do at least 10 000 miles per summer. T2W knows how short summer is in Canada ;)

Short term project: finishing a bass for april
Mid term project: making the kitchen cabinets
long term project: raise our kids with the best I can give them
