with apologies for thread hijack, over the years I had most of the desirable 90s ones
twilight zone (3 times)
medieval madness (twice - the second one was the last one i had to let go; it was my favorite fan-layout pin)
monster bash
fish tales
addams
indiana jones
shadow (that one was the one time FA broke a machine I shipped out - just the plunger gun assembly though)
revenge from mars
millionaire
demolition man (my first pin)
black knight 2k
star trek TNG
stern playboy
whitewater
lord of the rings
EDIT i had a Creature from the black lagoon too - thanks sonojono for reminding me of that one. MOOVE YOOUURRR CAAARRRRR!

I might have forgotten a couple, but I always only had 1 to 3 at a time. I like to have one flow machine and one precision machine side by side for variety of play - like a fan-layout machine and a lawlor machine.

Would love to get back into it, but the prices are just stupid now. Back when I was buying them, you could buy brand-new Sterns like my LOTR for $3600.
Sorry, I couldn't resist. I apologize for also veering off course, but for $10 bucks a day you get unlimited play on every pinball machine from the earliest models to the present. It's so much fun. Maybe a club Bass and Pinball

To bring it back onto course, I am out of bass boxes, so next bass I ship I'll need a box, so makes sense to buy a box and a postage sticker from these guys.
Wow, vid1900, you shipped a 427 ci motor ? Now THAT is cool !! Thanks for the info regarding that really heavy stuff can go from / to a Fastenal store. I have two near me, so that's great to know.

I wonder if there are insurance limitations on ‘vintage’ instruments. FedEx caps coverage at $1000 for instruments over 20 years old.

It's usually impossible to collect the full amount from high value packages anyway. They try and wear you down after months of nonsense

Better and cheaper to self-insure with outside companies

Whitewater is the greatest pinball machine of all time, Attack From Mars is number two.

Yeah, the days of Super Auctions prices are long gone unfortunately.
Oh man this wasn't even auction pricing. My LOTR was that much new-in-box. The rest was just RGP collector trading levels - TZs were still under $2500; a decent Addams was still about 2 grand. I sold my last Medieval for $7k in the late '00s - really the last classic machine to go *up* in value (above new) I think, and I don't think you can touch one under 10 now.

And back to the thread again - i sure hope somebody buys my bass for sale so I can see how much shipbikes will charge compared to the other guys!

Hey this is great. I've used them twice for bikes - one shipped and one received - and the prices were great. Never thought to reach out to see if they'd do basses.

I wouldn’t have thought of it either except about 2 weeks earlier I shipped a bass via UPS and felt so totally hosed by the pricing it was still in the back of my mind.

I am about to ship a bass for the first time, and expecting a negative experience anywhere between "frustrating" and "disaster." I would like the experience to be smooth, convenient, fast, secure and inexpensive. I expect to achieve none of those goals. Any advice would be appreciated.

I need to ship a $1500 bass from one end of the CONUS to the other. I am considering my options and would love to hear your advice. I am curious about how/where to get insurance sold by a third party.

Pack it well, ideally hardshell inside a cardboard box with room for 2+ inches of padding on all sides.

There's no telling - most instruments show up OK however. I just received a classical guitar with no case (!) from Wisconsin..

I don't think it's necessary to be that concerned. I've bought and sold over 50 ukes and bass ukes online in the last seven years and the only one that had any issues with shipping was an acoustic bass I ordered from Aquila in Italy. It was in a gig bag with no padding, in a box with no padding and when it arrived, the tail end of the box was smashed, and the tail of the ABS body was cracked and the top from the tail to the bridge had four long cracks. Obviously it was dropped from high right on the tail end.

So, yes, pack it really well and when you ship it with ShipBikes, there's a place where you choose the value to include insurance.

I’m sure there are a number of videos about packing instruments to ship. If you take a look at Trogly’s guitar channel he has a boxing and unboxing video at least once a week and while he doesn’t focus on packing the instruments you get to see it on the video. He also did a review of the StewMac packing kit and went into more detail about how he likes to pack instruments and he ships a lot of them. Plus, you typically get to see some interesting instruments, granted they’re typically guitars, but still...

I’ve shipped so many I can’t count. If possible, use one box inside another. Put foam or bubble wrap in the space between the the two boxes. After you have padded the guitar itself, always put a cardboard tube, a cardboard triangle tube, (or even use styrofoam cups inside) standing perpendicular to the body of the guitar, (thicker than the depth of the body) to keep the box from being crushed. Fill any empty spaces with loose packing materials. That is especially important with acoustic bodies! I hope you find this helpful. Third party insurance always cost way more than it was worth. I use FedEx and their insurance.
