Club Moollon

With the options currently available, I feel very fortunate to have these two Moollons :
- a chambered P with binding and block inlays
- a Metallic green telecaster with body binding and matching headstock

Well... No luck finding any Moollons in Seoul at the moment, but I did get to visit the Moollon shop! Andi & YG were kind enough to coordinate a visit so my uncle and I could see where the magic happens. It was truly a highlight of the trip.

Did you happen to see any JVs in OTM almost ready? 😂

It’s hard to walk around in there, huh? Every square inch has something going on. I loved his old apothecary cabinet behind his station that holds various parts. He didn’t point that out, but my wife knew what it was. That’s awesome you got to go there. Hopefully you have a little bit more time there to track one down.

It's great to see the man is in good form.

Alright guys, I have to say, I'm really smitten with the idea of a Moollon bass. Right now, I'm the proud owner of some Alleva P basses, which are serving as my reference guide to what I might like on a Moollon. All in all, I don't think there are any wrong choices, just different ones. As I don't have the option of trying a Moollon beforehand, I am kindly asking to lean on your experiences to try and make a decision I'm most comfortable with.

Quick background...weekend warrior, can scratch out a bassline but technique is not the picture of perfection. I enjoy bass gear and it's really my only hobby, so it does mean something to me. I LOVE my 1.75" nut Alleva neck (1963 profile, thin but not a '62 blade). I've always felt "meh" about standard P bass necks, and J bass necks are fun but ultimately I keep returning to the 1.75.

Andi has been AWESOME about answering my 1000 questions, but even with the narrowed options I feel a little lost. I've never seen a Moollon in actuality so it's all theoretical to me.

What's decided so far:
P bass
Mac board

Where I'm stuck:

P vs J neck --> Leaning toward the P but again, not the biggest fan of "meaty" necks. Then again, J width is fun for a change of pace but not my #1 choice either. 1.75" nut is not an option, which I completely understand and respect. YJ is 1 human being making instruments with the utmost attention to detail...have to give the man a break with the options he can offer :D What do you guys think? I'm inclined just to stick with the P and not overthink it any more than I already have...

Finish --> completely subjective, I know. Is there maybe a signature color YJ is known for? Olinto has their "Carbonetti gold" theme, Alleva Coppolo's Olympic White is held in high regard...Is it Inca Silver for YJ? ALL of his finishes look pretty damn fantastic...kind of stuck between Inca Silver/Tort Guard, Sonic Blue/Parchment Guard, Fiesta Red/Tort Guard or maybe Vintage White/Tort Guard (my AC is Olympic White already though...). Kind of liking the idea of Inca Silver I think...

Relic? --> not even sure if this is an option anymore...leaning towards yes (if available) even though the finishes naturally relic anyway... if it already has dinks/donks then I don't feel badly when I inevitably put in a few myself!

Andi, if you see this post, again THANK YOU for your replies, I feel badly asking you even more questions so I'm roping some kinds souls from the TB community in ;)

Thanks in advance for your thoughts guys! Glad to be a member of the TB community :)

FWIW, my favorite of his finishes are the oly white, and all the light green/blue Fender classics (surf green, sonic blue, daphne blue, etc). I have an Inca Silver P which looks terrific.

Where do you live? Moollon players are fairly spread out and maybe there's a chance to meet up with one?

If you're gonna make the commitment, I would strongly recommend putting out of your mind doing anything even remotely "custom" or requiring a special order (what's left of them, anyway), with the exception of maybe the truss rod access routing, which doesn't require astrological-levels of celestial harmony in order to complete the job.

The man works in mysterious ways and it's far from a "First in, first out" kind of a thing. It's hard enough to get a stock Moollon out the door let alone all the fancy things people want, which we have seen can delay a bass by an unreasonably long time. But hey, it's your time, and only you can decide how to spend it.

Oh I totally agree regarding “custom” specs! I’m looking for a stock P bass with either a P or J neck…thazzit! I live in Queens if anyone is close by with a Moollon :)

My questions are basically: are the P necks chunky? What finishes do you guys like? Do you recommend the relic’ing thing or no?

They are pretty much all subjective and the best answer is what do I like, yes…just curious what fellow bass enthusiasts may like too, and the Moollon faithful in particular will have a sense of what YJ does best (and thank you for your insights, sonic blue shot up the rank list ;) )

The truss rod access is a great idea! Thank you!

I've owned two Ps from Moollon. One has a wonderful not-too-chunky neck. I ordered another, and while they both measured basically the same, the newer one felt chunkier. I think the shoulder of the neck just had fractionally more meat on it, but you could feel it. So personal. I sold the newer P and kept the old one, which I bought used, just because that was the one I bonded with. It's one dude hand shaping, so variation is a thing in this world.

Thank you, that's another great insight. I think maybe I can just say let's do a P bass neck, as thin back to front as YJ wants, and whatever he does he does and I just have to live with the fact that that's what the master builder thought was best. :)

There are a lot of Moollons in NYC. You’ll probably reach more locals on the Moollon Basses FB page. I’m in south Jersey and have a PV and a 56’ P that anyone here is welcome to try.

Is anyone in the Monterey, CA area with a Moollon p to check out?

I'll ship mine out to you in like...5 years apparently :)

Thanks much! I actually haven't had Facebook since 2004...on purpose :D

I'm in Jersey a lot though, in-laws live in Bergen. Maybe I make the drive if you're free!
