This ^^^^^!

Some players question having an amp over 500 watts saying "I don't need anything that loud."

It's not about sheer volume.

It's about what that extra wattage does for the overall tone and feel at any level.
My thoughts exactly! A lot of musicians don't understand that power equals more tone and presence. I call it the weight-to-note-ratio. Everytime I play a note it feels like it's punching me in the chest. 😅

I've always been one who carried the LED sleds because I did not wanna sacrifice my tone for weight. When the first light weight DSP amps came out that's what many musicians did....SACRIFICE TONE FOR WEIGHT. Fast forward with new technology and we can have a 5k amp under 13 lbs that sounds better than Led-sleds.

To sum things up most would agree that buying a mansion is more house than they will ever need but it doesn't stop rich folk from doing just that. I did tell Trickfish that they could probably offer this amp in a 2U version with only 1 power amp module. Or sell a modular version of the 3U with the option to add a amp module later if needed.

All I'm saying is there's a new KIng in town and if you want the best then this is it!

With all the usual caveats about "...plus an army of roadies to carry it all for me" my Dream Amp(s) would probably be some variant on this one that I described years ago on TB in this thread:
- Bass du jour would feed a 1:2 splitter, probably something by Radial
- Output #1 of the splitter feeds a mint-condition early 1970s Ampeg SVT head, driving either (2) Hartke XL410B cabinets or (4) Eden David-series D-115 cabinets.
- Output #2 of the splitter feeds an Agular DB680 preamp
- the Effects Loop of the DB680 feeds an Alembic SF-2 SuperFilter and an Empirical Labs Distressor before looping back
- the Main Output of the DB680 feeds a Bryston 7B-SST2 power amp, driving a pair of Bag End S15-D cabinets and a pair of Bag End S15X-D cabinets
- the Lo-Pass Output of the DB680 feeds a Bag End IPD18E-R self-powered Infrasub cabinet
- the Hi-Pass Output of the DB680 feeds a DigiTech 2120 Artist, which feeds a Bryston 4B-SST2 power amp, driving a pair of Bag End D10BX-D cabinets

(Admittedly now, nine years after I wrote ^^^that, I'd probably choose a different subwoofer than the Bag End IPD18E-R ...possibly something from Meyer Sound? And if we're truly talking money-no-object Dream Amp then maybe replace all the Bryston amps with FM Acoustics amps...although I don't know if those are as roadworthy as Brystons. Well, I'll just have to tell my army of roadies to be careful hauling the amp racks!)

A good friend of mine owned a Bryston back in the day and I got to play bass through it a few times. Even by the standards of the time it was quite the boat anchor when it came time to move it, but it certainly sounded great!

It is true with more wattage you get more power at low frequencies, but amp with less wattage starts to sing when it comes to the sweet spot (Tube Amp).

I love both.
I had a 50watt tube combo fender Adam Clayton. It was so sweet but I do not like new fender amps. They are expensive but cheap built and a really bad support in eu.

Fiou !!!!! Glad to read your last sentence !

Mesa pretty much kicks the b… of all amps on the market nowadays.
Well, of all the amps on the market that offer the sound I’m looking for 😊

There are a lot of nice bass amps out here right now. Not like it was when I was a kid and there was maybe 5 guitar amp companies that built bass amps as well. Or the only bass content came from a magazine called Guitar Player 🤔

🤣

You guys need to check out the Trickfish Bullhead 3k. To my knowledge the most powerful head on the market today. An absolute beast and will put the Aguilar DB751 to shame and that's saying something. Ive had the DB751 and its a very powerful head but nothing compared to 5000 watts of pure goodness. It has 2 amps in 1 and weighs under 13 lbs. 🤯. The weight-to-note ratio is unbelievable!

My question is what cabinet(s) would you use with all that?

The only two amps that still loom as dreams for me would be the Marshall 200 (the Pig, not the later more standard-style Major) and a Hiwatt DR201. Otherwise, I have all mine, Sunn 2000s, Hiwatt DR103, and Acoustic 360 and 370. Plus my dream preamps, two Ashly SC-40s.
You are the first who suggest a Marshall -great.
Between dr103 and dr201 what would be your first choice? And why? Which cabs are you using with hiwatt?
