Earthquaker Devices Blumes

How clean does mode 2 get with the gain ser low? Can it act as a transparent clean boost or is there alway a change to the tone regardless of the settings?
Is mode 2 designed more to drive a tube amp which is why the level is so much more than the other modes?
Very clean, and extremely loud. I would guess you're probably right, it's meant to drive an amp. I'd say mode 2 is an almost clean boost. It's gonna change the tone a bit, but not drastically.

If the tone is too bright, you can adjust to taste with the tone knob on your bass. I feel like the tone knob on the Blumes just muffles things when you take it to the bass side. It works better for me to just adjust on the bass.

I took a chance recently on the Blumes pedal, bought it at Sweetwater. I play a P bass with Chromes flats, and thought I'd be able to get the "slight breakup" sound I had in mind but have been able to achieve it thus far after numerous attempts, it's clearly really good at higher throttle extreme OD/distortion/fuzz but not working into my cup of tea.

Considering trading it with someone who by chance has a good slight breakup pedal but is looking for a more aggressive pedal or downright selling it. I've never posted on the classifieds, so scouting ahead if there's any interest, paid 100 bucks plus shipping and it is absolutely mint, all original package and etc that came with it.

Sweetwater has a pretty excellent return policy, might start there unless it’s been much more than a month since you bought it

@cactusjuice thanks agains for the advice, I returned the Blooms pedal to Sweetwater who refunded cash & credited me back on the gift card, my sales rep Adam was awesome and responsive! I'm working on finding an alternate. I can definitely see this being a great pedal for players with rounds looking for medium, to aggressive grinding distortion.

The Pitbull Audio Black-on-Black version of the Blumes is back up on reverb if anyone is interested!

I loved the Blumes and definitely used the heck out of mine, but ultimately the Mr. Black Bass OD has taken over that category on my boards. I have tried so many things, many of them more than once or thrice, but that Mr. Black is the one dirt box that has the sound I hear in my head across multiple basses, finger style, pick style, it just does it all perfectly in my rig. That said, the Blumes is by far my fave "bass tube screamer" and I would happily have one on a board if I hadn't minimized.

I need to try the Mr. Black again. I got rid of it way too quickly.

What specifically do you like about it?

Hard to explain, but it just has that light to mid gain tone I love. More importantly, it just seems to work in any situation and with any playing technique. I tend to peg the bass control on the Mr. Black, so it may not impress with "all controls at noon," but with the EQ shelf favoring bass, it really sounds great and does not need a blend to retain fundamental.

I play in some disparate live situations that call for finger style and pick style playing, and this is where a lot of boxes sound great with a pick, but less so with finger style and vice versa. I loved the Blumes with a pick, but not as much when I would switch to finger style.

When I had the Mr. Black, I didn't totally understand subtlety and the value of a "light" OD much less how to really use it. I wanted it to be more of a Muff, which it definitely is not and isn't supposed to be. I'd like to try it again.

Yeah. I have found that it's difficult to find one overdrive which suit both finger style a pick playing. That's why I use different drives (and different crossover setting) for either style:

Broughton Scorpion (with crossover set at approx. 1.2 kHz) for pick playing
JPTFX Jive (with crossover set at approx. 350 Hz) for fingerstyle

Hi John, these look great! Based on your experience with these now a few months in, what audio pot value would you recommend, 250K, 500K or 1M? I'm tempted to give soldering a go, it's a great pedal with a poor level pot choice.
1M would work well.
